What to Watch This Week - The Wire PhotoThis week brings one classic to an end, a new show to the end of its first season, and some new shows that might or might not fill the void. There are some intriguing sports match-ups as well

What to Watch Live

The Wire (Sunday, HBO, 9 PM)

HBO’s cop show comes to an end after 5 seasons on the air. Although it has not enjoyed the commercial success of some of the other shows on the network, The Wire has been named the best show on television by a wide range of critics and has built up a big hardcore following.

Breaking Bad (Sunday, AMC, 10 PM)

The first season closes after only 7 episodes because of the writers’ strike. Breaking Bad is the first show in television history to revolve around a meth dealer, making for some interesting scenes. Former Malcolm in the Middle star Bryan Cranston has received rave reviews as the lead character, but it remains to be seen whether or not AMC will bring the show back for another season.

What to DVR

New Amsterdam (Tuesday, FOX, 8 PM)

FOX premieres what may be the cheesiest detective show in the history of television. The lead character, named John Amsterdam, is immortal, having had a spell cast on him in 1642. He cannot age until he finds true love, which has eluded him for over 500 years, but will probably come fairly easily now that he has a TV show to help him pick up girls and solve life’s mysteries. DVR it because it will most likely be either good or incredibly awful, with little chance for the middle ground.

High School Reunion (Wednesday, TV Land, 10 PM)

TV’s newest reality show tells the story of a bunch of people who graduated from high school together in 1987. Watch all the drama of the old days come back, but of course the people who managed to turn out normal will not be shown because they wouldn’t make for interesting TV.

What Sports to Watch

Ottawa Senators vs. Ducks (Monday, FSW, 7 PM)

The Ducks are rolling, having won 5 straight and 10 of 11. They meet last year’s Stanley Cup finals opponent in the Senators, who are not in anywhere near as good of form after getting off to an excellent start this season. Still, the Senators boast some of the league’s best talent, and with a recent coaching switch, may be able to get back to how good they were last season.

San Antonio Spurs at Phoenix Suns (Sunday, ABC, 12:30 PM)

These two teams have developed quite a rivalry, stemming largely from an incident in last year’s playoffs that left Steve Nash bloodied and Amare Stoudemire suspended. The Suns brought in Shaquille O’Neal at the trade deadline to help them defend other teams’ interior offense, an experiment that to this point appears to be a failure. This game will bring the league’s top interior player, Tim Duncan, to Phoenix. Can the new-look Suns defeat their #1 nemesis, or will the Spurs now have an even bigger advantage?
