It doesn’t matter who you are or what you do – everyone is Irish on St. Paddy’s Day. Every March 17th, pubs across town fill up with lads and lassies searching for a cold pint and a good time. Not sure where to go? Try out one of these Irish-themed watering holes:
Sonny McLean’s (2615 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica 310.449.1811) If you love Beantown and the Red Sox, this is your bar. No other bar in town pledges greater love for New England sports, as is evidenced by the shamrock mural on the Westside of the building. Be advised that this quaint little bar lacks a parking lot and serves beer and wine only. A small price to pay for a little bit of Boston.
If you’re searching for a harder drink, cross the street to O’Briens (2226 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica 310.829.5303). With lots of seating and a full bar, you’ll find it by the light of the neon shamrock on the outside of the building.
Considering that St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Monday this year, happy hour may be more your speed. Finn McCool’s (2702 Main Street, Santa Monica 310.452.1732) has a weekday special that will fill your belly with little strain on your wallet. Happy Hour is from 3pm – 7pm Monday through Saturday and all beer, well drinks, wine and select appetizers are $3.00. Street parking on Main is difficult, so opt for the lots along Ocean – or even better, take a taxi.
After you’ve exhausted all other Santa Monica offerings, consider the other O’Brien’s (2941 Main Street, 310.396.4725). Happy hour starts at opening and continues till 8pm daily, and most nights feature live music. If you’re hungry the fare is traditional: fish & chips, shepherd’s pie and bangers and mash. It’s like you were in Dublin – only warmer and dry.
If you’re anxious and unwilling to wait in line at the local Irish pub, do what I did last year and visit your local Mexican restaurant. May I suggest La Cabana (738 Rose Ave, Venice, 310.392.6161)? The tequila sampler is excellent and they’re open till 3am – long after all these pubs have closed.
