Some of you may have caught the band Colour Music playing through LA in the past week. If not, no worries I’m sure they’ll be back, but in the meantime here is a little interview that CityZine was lucky enough to get while they were in town.
When I first started speaking with the members of the band I was rather confused. I finally figured out that every member of the band is Roy G. Biv, or rather R(ed) O(range) Y(ellow) G(reen) B(lue) I(ndigo) V(iolet). Apparently one member of the band is extremely famous and wishes to keep his identity anonymous. If you see them live, they will all pretend to be Roy G. Biv. They are in essence completely anonymous, and yet completely available. Here is what I was able to gather about the band.
Colourmusic is the first musical venture of one Roy G. Biv–a descendant of the famous alchemist, Sir Isaac Newton. Roy’s name is not his real name, it’s a pseudonym to protect his identity and even though his name may not be serious, his music is. Roy was born with a bizarre disorder called synesthesia. When Roy listens to music he actually sees color, and it is a disorder that has genetically plagued his family for centuries and had inspired Newton’s theory of colour music. The first album is a collection of songs inspired by Isaac’s theory on the relationship of colour and sound.
So here you go. CityZine’s interview with the elusive Colour Music!
What was the first record you ever bought? And where did you buy it?
Piedmont Roy - I bought Huey Lewis in the News Greatest Hits because I loved “The Heart of Rock and Roll” because in the song it said “Oklahoma City.” And I loved that at like three. My mom probably bought it for me from Target.
BritRoy - I can’t remember exactly, but it might have been the Liverpool football club theme song on 7 inch vinyl. It must have been a HMV music shop.
Newkirk Roy - I think the first record must have been “Please hammer dont hurt em” by MC Hammer. I couldn’t actually buy it because my parents wouldn’t let me, so I borrowed it from a friend and never returned it.
Blonde Ponca Roy – I bought Metallica’s “And Justice For All” on cassette when I was in the third grade, so I was probably eight or nine at the time. It drastically changed my life forever.
Ponca Roy USA – Michael Jackson’s Bad and Beach Boys’ Kokomo in the same day. I was six and it was like a pop music speedball.
What’s the best cure for a hangover?
Piedmont Roy - Hunting rabbits.
BritRoy - Walking in the woods or watching James Bond.
Newkirk Roy - Watching the Matrix Reloaded, especially the scene with the architect.
Blonce Ponca Roy - Eating the “Big Country” breakfast at Shortcakes in Stillwater. It consists of two eggs, two sausages, hashbrowns, toast, and pancakes (or a waffle). Simply divine.
Ponca Roy USA - I like to give plasma and start all over again.
What’s on your ipod?
Piedmont Roy - Every mix tape I’ve ever had. What I don’t like about ipods is you basically have one mix, for some reason it always selects the same tracks on shuffle, so I have literally three bags of mix tapes, which I still make, and I’ve transferred them to my ipod.
BritRoy - I haven’t got an iPod… yet.
Newkirk Roy - I hesitate to say so, but lately I mainly listen to lectures on my ipod, mainly philosophy and religion stuff, as well as hooked on phonics. And yes, I have the phonics monkey.
Blonde Ponca Roy - My iPod broke down, but I’ve been listening to “Fear” by John Cale, “Historie de Melodie Nelson” by Serge Gainsbourg and “Joao” by Joao Gilberto.
Ponca Roy USA - Mine just gots songs. It would be cool to get one of them that gots pictures or movies. But mine just gots songs.
How do you get ready for a live show?
Piedmont Roy -Pain therapy. I concentrate fully on why I’m not good enough, and then go from there.
BritRoy - I find a quiet corner to sit in and cry.
Newkirk Roy - BritRoy and I usually act out the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet. BritRoy is actually an excellent thespian.
Blonde Ponca Roy – Listen to “And Justice For All” by Metallica in its entirety.
Ponca Roy USA – I try to pick a fight with someone smaller than me.
What’s your favourite song to play live?
Piedmont Roy - I love playing “yes”
BritRoy - anything I don’t have to sing on.
Blonde Ponca Roy – I honestly love the whole set. I find our music is a lot of fun to play live. Bass is quite essential for our music, so I get my rocks off throughout the whole set.
Ponca Roy USA - I wrote a country song called “the Gift.” It’s my favorite. Its real patriotic.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Piedmont Roy - Riding horses at dusk and hunting rabbits with a bow I constructed.
BritRoy - Agatha Christie novels.
Newkirk Roy - Nascar
Blonde Ponca Roy - George Michael
Ponca Roy USA - Lesbian Puppets
Who would win in a fight, a Ninja or a Pirate and why?
Piedmont Roy–It would take a really fat Ninja to beat a pirate.
BritRoy - The pirate would shoot the ninja in the face before any fighting took place.
Blonde Ponca Roy – Ninja. Have you ever played Ninja Geidon? ‘Nuff said.
Ponca Roy USA - Me. I would. Have you ever seen me? I’m badass.
What was the last album you bought?
Piedmont Roy -Probably David Bowie’s “Man Who Sold the World.”
BritRoy - It was ‘Parallelograms’ by Linda Perhacs.
Newkirk Roy - Probably the new Radiohead album.
Blonde Ponca Roy - “In Rainbows” by Radiohead
Ponca Roy USA - Michael Jackson’s Bad and the Beach Boys’ Kokomo
If you could rid the world of one song, what would it be?
Piedmont Roy -Best question ever, if only I could rid the world of a genre. Probably the last song released from an American Idol contestant.
BritRoy - Great question! There would be many but I think ‘nobody does it better’ by Carly Simon would be the first I would erase from existence.
Newkirk Roy -How ’bout that song by chumbawaumba, I think it was called ‘tub thumpin’ but I always get that confused with ‘tub girl’ so I can never be sure.
Blonde Ponca Roy - “Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow” by Fleetwood Mac. I f**king hate that song.
Ponca Roy USA - Lamb Chop’s “The Song that Doesn’t End” it gets me every time.
Who would play you in a film based upon your life?
Piedmont Roy -Billy Zane.
BritRoy - Rhys Ifans or Sean Bean (008 in James Bond - ‘Goldeneye’)
Newkirk Roy - I would say either Woody Allen or Macaulay Culkin from home alone.
Blonde Ponca Roy - Hands down, Ewan Mcgregor. With a beard I look exactly like him. Without a beard, Sloth from “Goonies.”
Ponca Roy USA - Brian “The Bozz” Bozzworth, Have you seen him? He’s badass.
Dead or alive. What 5 acts would you have play with you at a festival?
Piedmont Roy -The last five American Idol winners.
BritRoy - fuck…shit…err…let’s say Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and the sliver apples but it they would all have to be transported directly from the late 60’s.
Newkirk Roy - Ditto on the above but I would have to add the Brian Jonestown Massacre.
Blonde Ponca Roy - The Beatles, Metallica, Radiohead, LCD Soundstystem, Talking Heads. Something for everyone.
Ponca Roy USA - Sly and the Family Stone, James Brown, The Who, Van Hagar, and Kraftwork would DJ the afterparty.
If push comes to shove, what is your all-time favorite album?
Piedmont Roy -Bjork “Verspertine”
BritRoy - The Byrds ‘Notorious byrd brothers’
Newkirk Roy - Either Revolver or ‘Hard Workin Man’ by Brooks and Dunn. The backbeat on that record is spot on.
Blonde Ponca Roy - “Historie De Melodie Nelson” by Serge Gainsbourg. Best musicianship on a record ever. I absolutely love the bass tones on that record.
Ponca Roy USA - Zombies “Oddessy and Oracle”
What’s your most memorable on the road story?
Piedmont Roy - I got chewed out for peeing on the seat in a McDonald’s bathroom. Some old guy was watching me and then actually went to the cashier, pointed at me and said, “I saw this asshole man peeing on the seat.” He was probably right.
BritRoy - I literally just stepped off a stage in club in Kansas when a lady approached me and asked if she could wrap me in a blanket and take me home for the night.
Newkirk Roy - It has to be the time that I peed on the seat at a Macdonalds and blamed it on Peidmont Roy.
Blonde Ponca Roy - That one time one of us did something crazy and people noticed.
Ponca Roy USA - Getting Peed on while dressed as a Mc Donalds toilet seat on Halloween and secretly liking it.
Favorite place in LA?
Piedmont Roy - Any place that shows movies.
BritRoy - LAX. hahaha. just kidding. I haven’t seen that much really but anywhere on the beach is
good for me.
Newkirk Roy - I think my favorite place was the Scientology Center on Sunset.
Blonde Ponca Roy - Seeing the city limits sign.
Ponca Roy USA - Ditto
What’s the best piece of advice someone has ever given you and did you take notice?
Piedmont Roy - Our band manager, The Colonel, has told us that it is really easy to pick pocket fans after shows when they congratulate you on your set. It has really helped stay a working road band.
BritRoy - Fox Mulder says ‘Trust Nobody’. It’s always worked for me.
Newkirk Roy - LRH says to brush your teeth after every meal.
Ponca Roy USA - A shepherd once told me to “take it anyway you can get it.” Not sure what that means, but it sounds smart.
What would be your perfect LA day?
Piedmont Roy - Drinking wine on the beach, then riding along the beach hunting rabbits with my bow I constructed.
BritRoy - Wake up, watch a good movie, lie on the beach, then go back to bed.
Newkirk Roy - I think it would start with a leisurely E-Meter Reading, then a personality audit and then a thai massage.
Blonde Ponca Roy - Hanging out with the Laguna Beach ladies, eating salads and talking about how gross boys are.
