We all know that I’m a MASSIVE American Idol fan. Say what you will about that and me, but please don’t try and trash my show. It seems that with all the great singing and dynamite performances the internet blogersphere has still yet to really cover anything about the program other than the bull shit side chatter, tabloid gossip that runs on and on about the contestants.
The latest victim is the so far, very interesting prospect, David Hernandez. Apparently he was a sexy male stripper at a mainly gay dance club in a former life. Gay dancer or not the dude can sing. I’m not sure whether I care or not about his midnight cowboy dancer days, but I do care about whether or not he gets to the finals on AI.
The show and his role on it is what I’ve been following up until this point. I read all about this crap early in the afternoon yesterday, several hours before the show aired. As I watched American Idol and listened to Hernandez pump out his 80’s jam, whatever it was, for the first time I realized I wasn’t really listening to his song, I was checking out his mannerisms and facial expressions testing out my Gaydar to see if there might be any truth behind his seemingly tainted past.
I wanted to listen to his singing so I could make a well-informed and honest assessment of his abilities and vocal range. With all of this sidebar BS the media and the rumormille have manipulated my skills. I couldn’t vote last night it just didn’t seem right. I just didn’t feel like I had all the facts. Even though 16-year-old Phnom David Archuleta has pretty much got my vote and opinion sowed up, I thought Hernandez initially had a pretty darn amazing voice himself, and out of the boys, he might give Archuleta his toughest competition.
I don’t think that Hernandez is another Antonella Barba, even though she’s probably the hottest Idol of all-time, David is a much better singer, and according to woman not bad looking. I’m glad AI didn’t buckle to the media trash and spin. They could’ve cut Hernandez because of this shit, and that would just not be fair.
American Idol is without question the most watched show on TV while it’s on, and sometimes even between seasons, and generally we consider America to be a Christian, belief in right vs. wrong kind of place, I’m not saying Hernandez is going to win, but if he did and he was a gay male stripper for a time, it would be tough for him to avoid and dodge the tornado at that point. Literally, nothing would save him. I’m glad we’re at least letting him sing, because he is very gifted. He’s apparently one hell of a dancer as well. It’s un-American to not at least let him have a chance, but in the real world we all know he can’t be allowed to win. Fucked up or not it’s simply the reality of reality TV in a place like the USA.
