  • 13-year-old shot and killed while picking lemons - Anthony Ezquiel Escobar, 13, was shot several times by an unknown killer while he was picking lemons outside of his home. He was found lying on the ground and later died at the hospital. His cousin told reporters that he was in no way affiliated with any gangs. This attack has been one of many deaths in a long list of recent youth murders.
  • Body of a woman found over ice in a hotel room at the Fairmont in Newport - Authorities were investigating the room of Stephen David Royd after he was spotted selling cocaine near the hotel he had been living in. When they searched the room, they discovered a woman’s body being kept on dry ice. Orange County deputy coroner Dan Akin says an autopsy of the body was “inconclusive” and that they are trying to identify the cause of death. Police are holding Royds until they find out whether or not he was involved in the death.
  • Deputies cleared of responsibility for the death in an O.C. jail -  A nine-month grand jury investigation into the beating death of an Orange County jail inmate, John Chamberlain, found no crimes were committed by sheriff’s deputies. But, Dist. Atty. Tony Rackauckas said the 2006 slaying could have been avoided if the sheriff’s had followed their own procedures to ensure inmate safety. Chamberlain, 41, of Mission Viejo was killed when 20 inmates, stomped on him for nearly half an hour, because they believed he was charged with child molestation. Chamberlain was actually accused of possessing child pornography.

  • Pet shop in Bell Gardens accused of abusing animals - The pet shop has been accused and searched for the selling underage animals “prescribing medicine without a license, acting as a veterinary clinic, and in one case even performing surgery recently on an animal.” Southeast Area Animal Control Authority officers served the search warrant and spent more than three hours collecting evidence. “What we have is allegations that this pet store is Officers questioned employees and impounded sick puppies and turtles.”
  • Dance teacher sexually assaults students - Joseph Sheck, 54, a co-owner of the Van Nuys Performing Arts Center was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting several female students at his facility. “Sheck … allegedly sexually assaulted several young adult female students at his art center,” police said in the statement. “According to detectives, Sheck intimidated and threatened to ‘black ball’ the students from talent agencies if they refused his sexual advances.”
  • Teachers aide accused of abusing an autistic child - Ernesto Maldonado, 29, of Santa An, a former teacher’s aide at a Cypress school was arrested yesterday for allegedly twisting the arm of an autistic student behind his back, lifting him to his feet. The mother of the 14-year-old boy reported the case to police and two other adult teachers aides said they witnessed the event. The witnesses reported that the boy had done nothing to provoke Maldonado. Maldonado has been fired and has been booked in  the O.C Jail with a bail of $100,000.
  • 70-year old killed in car crash -  Salvador Gonzaga Gonzales, 70, died at Riverside County Regional Medical Center at 1:14 a.m Friday after a truck he was driving was struck by another truck. The Nuevo man, was critically injured in the crash and died late Thursday evening.
  • 24 men arrested, 18 still wanted for longest running auto insurance scam -Twenty people were arrested Thursday and 18 others were being sought for dozens of allegedly fabricated accidents since 2000 that resulted in stealing more than $512,000 from 10 insurance companies. The alleged ringleader Curtis H. Connor, 72, who is still at large, involved several of his sons, daughters, and grandchildren to help in the scam. Connor has served several years in prison for a previous auto-insurance fraud conviction.  “We will keep searching until we get every one of them in custody,” Detective Ronald Vega said.
