Ok I know, I have another week to talk about St. Patrick’s Day, but this time around it’s about more than finding a good pub wherein to get schnockered. It’s about pride, and honor, and a the birth of a new Holiday:
“Oh My Goodness My” Guinness, the lovely blackened-red beer beloved by thousands of bitter beer lovers (this one joyously included) have decided to petition congress to make St. Patrick’s Day an official Holiday. I’m guessing that means we can get off school and work to get wasted on a Monday! Woo Hoo! Be sure to sign the petition here, they need over 800,000 MORE signatures by March 16th at midnight. But there’s more to St Patrick’s Day than Guinness, if that’s not your cup of…well, Guinness. As we know it’s also about getting together with friends and making general merriment. And being that I’m from the Valley, I know ALL about merriment!! Right?? Right. Here are my humble suggestions for the impending holiday.
I had the great fortune to grow up a few blocks down from the best Irish dive bar in the valley, called Ireland’s 32. I was always sort of skeptical of the place, it looked kind of… well… like a dive bar. But not a “Hollywood” one, a real one. There was always some older, tank-top wearing lady and biker or two, or maybe an odd skinny-random-guy perched outside the front door smoking in the daylight, hovering between the bar and the nail shop next door. But it wasn’t until I made friends with a group of Karaoke- (and alco-) holics that I discovered the real charm of this fading pub.
Though small, Ireland’s 32 is actually a really fun and FANTASTIC karaoke joint, with a little stage and an enourmous collection of songs, that I argue is the best over El-Cid and Bimbos hands down. Believe it or not, you get to actually SING, a lot, without waiting for hours. Every Tuesday is Karaoke night, and each time I’ve gone it’s been a surprisingly silly, young and unthreatening crowd. (Think, like, the difference between singing with a group of people from a theater camp vs. a group of people from a sport’s camp). They have live music most every night, and serve your typical pub fare and drinks. Check out their website for any more details. Then go and sing 7 Nation Army by the White Stripes.
But no matter where you go, or what you eat, make sure to remember that Ireland, that beautiful, stunning, and ethereal country, is the source of all this silly merriment. Take a moment to read about the origin of our beloved drinking day at about.com and make sure not to get pinched!
