Since, with the exception of yesterday, the intellect level of my recent posts hasn’t reached much farther than shopping or farmer’s markets, I’m making up for it tonight. Here are a few things that you can do around L.A. to educate yourself. Like, seriously provide some intellectual stimulation, guys.
1. California Science Center: Relive your middle school field-trip days and visit the California Science Center. The possibilities of learning are ENDLESS. You can enter the World of Life, the Creative World, World of the Pacific or the Worlds Beyond. The fact that I can go to an exhibit called “Creative World” is truly amazing. Opening March 14th is the world renowned exhibition “Body Worlds” which displays the human body quite literally from the inside out.
Located at 700 State Drive Los Angeles, CA 90037 (Map).
Call 213-744-7400 to find out more about this scientific treasure chest or visit them online.
2. The Griffith Observatory: Even though we can’t see the stars half the time living in Los Angeles we have the opportunity to go and learn about them at the Griffith Observatory. It is located at one of the highest points in LA: over 1000 feet above sea level, on the southern slope of Mount Hollywood. The observatory is open until 10 PM, which makes sense, seeing as it’s a night time, starry sky kind of deal.
The Samuel Oschin, “Planetarium Show” plays all the time but they also have special events on a regular basis.
Located in the Southern part of Griffith Park, at 2800 Observatory Rd. (Map).
For more information visit them online.
3. Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA): Not exactly an uncovered gem, the famous LACMA seems to always have something interesting going on. I saw the King Tut exhibit there, which was one of the most mysterious, beautiful and haunting display of art and history I have ever seen. Right now they have a new display called the “SoCal: Southern California Art of the 1960s and 70s.”
Of course there are always displays taking place, such as the Expressionism, Matisse, African Art, and Tibetan Painting.
The museum is located at 5905 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90036 (Map).
For more information call 323-857-6000 or go online.
For anyone using the buses, hop on the 720 or 920 Rapid buses, or the 20 Metro, which all shoot straight down Wilshire.
