  • Man found guilty for killing roommate with a samurai sword - Gary Dale Myers Jr., 30, was found guilty today of manslaughter in the killing of his housemate, Marco Gutierrez. Myers slashed and stabbed Gutierrez 24 times in the torso with a samurai sword. The only witness to the fight was Gutierrez’s girlfriend, Melissa Splain, who hanged herself seven months later.
  • Man found dead with an arrow in his chest - Lancaster man, Angel Martinez, 62, was found dead early this morning at 1:42am, on the street. A passerby called for help, thinking he had been hit by a car, but when police found him he was dead with an arrow in his chest. Martinez’s death is being investigated as a homicide. Investigators are seeking information and may be reached at (323) 890-5500.
  • Dead woman’s body may have been kept on dry ice for over a year -The dead woman who was found packed in dry ice in a luxury hotel room rented by an alleged cocaine dealer may have been dead for nearly a year. Stephen David Royds and Monique Felicia Trepp were regulars at Tapas, a restaurant across the street from the Fairmont, Arturo Flores, the eatery’s general manager, told the Orange County Register. In April or May, Royds told a restaurant employee that Trepp had died, Flores said, adding that he heard Royds held a memorial service for his deceased girlfriend.

  • Car-jacker shoots man at car wash - A 26-year-old Santa Ana resident was shot today, when a would-be carjacker came up from behind the man and demanded the car. “Almost immediately, he began firing,” and then ran off. The victim was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.
  • Gang member arrested in football players death - Pedro Espinoza, a 19-year-old alleged, 18th Street gang member was charged this morning with capital murder in the shooting death of Jamiel Shaw Jr., 17, just hours before the start of the standout high school football player’s funeral, authorities said.
  • 40% of teens having sex had an STD - At least one in four teenage American girls has a sexually transmitted disease, suggests adolescent-health experts. Only half the girls tested admitted to having sex, out of the ones that did, nearly 40% had STD’s. Some doctors said the numbers might be a reflection of both abstinence-only sex education and teens’ own sense of invulnerability.
  • UCI student found dead in trunk of car - Jacob Okoli, 21, was reported missing Feb. 25. Today he was found in thetrunk of his car with a bullet wound to the head, with the gun on his person. He had not registered for the last quarter and recently moved out of campus housing. Police are investigating the case as a possible homicide, but have not ruled out suicide. No suicide note was found.
  • Shooting near an Elementary school leaves on injured - Long Beach police say one person has been injured in a shooting across the street from Starr King Elementary school, which was placed on lock down as a precaution. The 18-year-old victim was taken to the hospital but his injuries were not life-threatening. The shooting was believed to be gang related.
  • Pepper Spray Forces out customers of Wilshire grand - Los Angeles police evacuated nearly 80 guests from the downtown Wilshire Grand Hotel at 4:45am this morning due to pepper spray.
  • Nurse gets 22.5 million for brain damage received in car crash - VENTURA, Calif. (AP) ― Dawn Renae Diaz was seriously injured when a pickup truck crash landed on her vehicle. She is now getting $22.5 million in one of Ventura County’s largest recent personal injury awards. A Superior Court jury decided late Friday that brain-damaged Dawn Renae Diaz should get $16 million for past and future medical care, as well as a nanny for her 10-year-old daughter. The rest of the money pays for lost wages, pain and suffering.
