What would happen if a group of 100 guys of all different shapes, sizes and ethnicities took off their shirts and wandered into Abercrombie & Fitch on the day the store had one of their buff male models greeting customers? Hilarity, chaos and confusion ensued, and although they all eventually were evicted from the store, they made a bold statement in a store that was the antithesis of everything their bodies represented.
Improv Everywhere is a group based in New York City devoted to causing scenes of “chaos and joy in public places,” as their description goes. The group has participated in over 70 missions involving thousands of undercover agents.
Think of them as when guerilla artist Banksy’s work transforms into real life acts of chaos, defiance and going against the norm. The group has staged hilarious events including a national day earlier this year where nearly 2,000 people in 10 different cities around the world took off their pants on subways for a No Pants! Subway Ride, a stunt in New York’s Grand Central Station where over 200 agents froze in place at the exact same second for 5 minutes while thousands of people rushed through the station around them and dressing up a team of agents to represent “U2″ and play on a roof building in New York City.
They’ve even performed in our very own City of Angels, in an amazing skit called “Food Court Musical” in which 16 agents staged a spontaneous musical at Baldwin Hills Mall, involving a Hot Dog on a Stick “employee,” a janitor, a security guard and regular mall go-ers. The song was an original composition called “Can I Get a Napkin (Please).” The entire event got an applause from surprised shoppers and employees and is definitely worth a look. It adds a bit of “chaos” as they say to the mundane routines of life and will make your day at the office just a wee bit better.
