Best Cupcake in LA: Delilah Bakery?

delilah.jpgI don’t need to go into detail about the geographic boundaries Angelenos create for themselves; everyone has at one point or another decided that they cannot go somewhere for the evening due to the traffic. (As an example, my mother hasn’t gone east of the 405 since her glory days at USC.) However, my dedication to the cupcake quest is strong and I wasn’t about to let 3 freeways (an 80 minute commute one-way) stop me. It was a long and at times arduous drive, and I pulled over not once, but twice, to consult my handy Thomas Guide, but I did eventually find Delilah Bakery in Echo Park.

After swerving up Echo Park Avenue, I arrived just 15 minutes before closing on a Saturday. It was the end of the day and pickings were slim (not unlike the featured photo of the display case) but I have a feeling the heavy vanilla aroma scenting the shop had something to do with that. The building is a pastel yellow, with Delilah painted prettily on the side. Small metal tables sit alongside the street, giving it country-chic vibe. There is no seating inside, a small cash wrap and display case, behind which is the bakery’s kitchen. It appears to be a simple operation.

What initially sets Delilah’s cupcakes apart from other bakeries is their presentation. Delilah cupcakes are baked and served in thick paper cups that are only slightly thinner than cardboard. This cupcake is not just a daily trifle, but a celebratory item. Not everyone’s grandmother could make this cupcake. I’m not a food scientist so I’m not quite sure how this happens, but as a result of the heavy duty cups a light, sugary crust forms on the sides of the cake during baking. This is a tasty departure from more traditional soft and spongy cupcakes. The cupcake itself is dense and flavorful, and after tasting the yellow, red velvet and chocolate cake, we decided that chocolate was by far the best. It was reminiscent of the Hershey’s cocoa chocolate cake recipe, my personal ultimate.

I hope you know more about Echo Park than I do, because I’d hate to make anyone suffer ten minutes without this cupcake, let alone eighty.

That place is close to my apartment and it sure does sound delicious. I’m definantly going to go check it out. What a great feature article, thanks!
