LA Events: Free day of Poetry, Films, and Comedy

bostoncourt08-03-13This Saturday, March 15th, the Boston Court Performing Arts Center will be hosting ArtLA a series of free performances, beginning at 11a.m. and ending at 5 p.m. ArtTalk is part of Pasadena’s biannual event of free arts entertainment sponsored by the city Cultural Affairs Department, the Pasadena Convention & Visitor’s Bureau and Pasadena Culture Net.

Here is your rundown of all the events and times:

    • At 11:ooam the day begins with Clark Branson’s “Raconteur of Song and Story” which celebrates words and story through traditional storytelling.
    • At 11:30 the Taiko center will be performing traditional and contemporary Japanese Taiko.
    • At 12:00, Nevenka, the Los Angeles-based women’s folk chorus will be performing songs from Eastern Europe.
    • At 12:30 things start to heat up as Def Poets, Paul Mabon, Viet Mai, and Joe Hernandez- Kolski will perform original works of poetry presented in” Def Jam.”

    • At 1:00 Alison Arngrim will be performing hits from her one-woman show “Confessions from the Praire,” where she discuss her time as Nellie Olsen on the Little House on the Prairie.
    • At 1:30 the KINdance company will be celebrating James Brown through dance and song with “Down Around Brown Town.”
    • At 2:00 Pirate Pig Press will be bringing you more poetry. This group believes that “the written word, the vocal word, the visual word, the instrumental word — is second only to matters of extreme living.”
    • At 2:35 Sybyl Walker’s love trilogy, “Beneath Rippling Water,” will be presented through dance, comedy, song and spoken word.
    • At 3:00pm the 16mm film “This Is the LA River” will be shown. This film was put together by 21 neighborhood youths between the ages of 14 to 19 to show the complex past, present, and future of the LA rover.
    • At 4:00pm the afternoon will conclude with more poetry from the Pirate Pig Press.

    The show takes place at 70 North Mentor Ave in Pasadena. There is free parking behind the center and the entire event is free.
