LA Wounded: Man Kills Dog, Bee’s Swarm Freeway, Deadly Car Crashes

  • LA Man Axes Dog -  Rudy Fernandez, 36, was arrested last Thursday, for using an ax to kill his brother’s pet basset hound Samantha after trying to strangle her to death for 30 minutes. He has been charged today with felony animal cruelty.
  • 21-year-old found dead in her apartment - Juliana Maureen Redding, 21,was found dead in her Santa Monica apartment, at 6pm last night, dead of unknown causes.
  • Big Rig Flips over bee’s swarm highway - 8-to-12 million bees escaped Sunday after a truck carrying crates of the insects flipped over on a California highway. The bees swarmed over an area of Highway 99 and stung officers, firefighters and tow truck drivers trying to clear the accident. Bradley says several beekeepers driving by the accident stopped to assist in the bee wrangling.
  •  Ex-Councilman pleads not guilt to sexual abuse - An ex-Gardena city councilman Monday pleaded not guilty to sexually abusing his young female relative.  Oscar Medrano, 47, is accused of eight counts of lewd acts on a child under 14, three counts of lewd acts on a child 14 or 15 years old, and one count of continuous sexual abuse. The teenage girl told a friend about the alleged abuse and the friend urged her to tell authorities.

  • Man beaten to death at gas station - Francisco Martinez, 47, died last night after being beaten at a Van Nuys gas station on March 8. No description of the suspect was available. Investigators were unsure of a motive for the attack.
  • 2 Killed in Crash on 55 Freeway - Two unidentified people were killed in a six-vehicle crash on the Costa Mesa Freeway (California 55) in Orange late Sunday. One was a motorcyclist who was traveling north when he lost control and struck the center divider. He was ejected into southbound lanes, where he was struck by several vehicles and died. The other was driver who swerved to avoid the motorcyclist, struck guardrails and was then struck by another vehicle.
  • Man jumps in front of LA Metro Subway Train - A man was hospitalized after apparently jumping in the path of a subway train near the Mid-Wilshire district of Los Angeles this morning. The man was “awake and alert” when rescuers removed him from beneath the train at the Vermont-Beverly Metro Red Line station in the 300 block of North Vermont Avenue. Investigators believe the man jumped in front of the train, but they have been unable to find witnesses and the man is not talking about what happened.
  • Lab Tech arrested for sexual assault - Authorities Monday were looking for possible victims of a phlebotomist arrested for allegedly committing sexual battery against a woman living in a convalescent home.  Jose “Sonny” Baltazar, 36, worked as a phlebotomist for LLC Laboratories, and would visit 20 to 30 patients daily in private home and hospitals around the city and county of Los Angeles. Baltazar was released on $70,000 bail in February, pending a scheduled appearance on March 28 in Van Nuys Municipal Court. Detectives believe there could be other alleged victims.   • 2 Dead, 1 injured in Freeway shooting -  Two people are dead and a third is seriously wounded after a car-to-car shooting on a San Diego highway. The cars were traveling eastbound on Highway 54 late Sunday when a gunman in one of the vehicles opened fire, causing the driver to lose control and crash.
    Two people in the demolished car are dead and a third is hospitalized with a bullet wound. No arrests have been made.
  • Teen gets 9 million after losing legs in accident -  Priscilla Contreras, 16, is getting $9 million from the state of California after she lost both legs when her car struck a broken guardrail on Interstate 10, that was jagged from being struck the previous day and ripped through the driver’s side door. Her family sued the state and its highway agency.
