Thursday, my husband and I received a call with the most important and life-changing news of our lives. Our contact from the adoption agency called to let us know that the Haitian orphanage from which we are adopting, had a 2.5 month old boy named Luc for us!
Adoption isn’t a spur of the moment decision. Serious discussion began about three years ago. Paperwork started a year and a half ago. Our finalized dossier was submitted in early July.
Well, actually we will have our son after the Haitian government ssslllooowwwlllyyy files all the paperwork. However, it’s time to prepare for sweet Luc.
This gave me a great idea.
What does downtown Los Angeles have to offer a couple with child? Or two? So, today I interview myself.
Big Al, the gal: Does having kids make downtown living an impossibility?
Big Al, the mommy: There is a type of person that loves the energy, diversity, and general creativity of living downtown. I’ve seen lots of people with kids. I think it is possible, though probably challenging.
Big Al, the gal: Is it even safe to have kids downtown?
Big Al, the mommy: I think so. Just take the same precautions you would take living anywhere in L.A. In the reading I’ve done, I haven’t seen comments about safety. Also, I’ve hung out with friends and their kids in the area and have never been nervous. Nor were my friends.
Big Al, the gal: What is there for a kid to enjoy downtown?
Big Al, the mommy: Travel For Kids has a page with a great list of loads of cool things to do on their website. The Central Library (my favorite place in the world) has some cool programs for kids, whether toddlers or teens.
Big Al, the gal: Sure, but what about the day to day of living there with kids?
Big Al, the mommy: I am hearing mixed reviews. Kathryn Maese wrote an interesting article and received some interesting comments. In my travels, I have also seen more kids in areas around The Toy Factory Lofts and some at Barker Block.
I guess I’ve raised a few more questions than I’ve answered. So, I’ll keep thinking and I’ll write on this subject again when I learn more.
