Best Cupcake in LA: Status Report

March 20th, 2008 Written by: Christianne· No Comments

Cupcakes 20080320It’s been two months, 9 bakeries and close to 40 cupcakes. You’ll forgive me for taking a break from reviewing cupcakes to give a status report and let the sugar ease out of my blood system so I can get a decent night’s sleep. I’ve also got a dentist’s appointment coming up soon and to say that I’m afraid of what may happen doesn’t even touch the depths of my fear.

In order of tastiest to least, here is the list to date:

  1. Dots Cupcakes, Pasadena
  2. SusieCakes, Brentwood
  3. Dainties, West LA
  4. Leda’s Bake Shop, Sherman Oaks
  5. Delilah Bakery, Echo Park
  6. Yummy Cupcakes, Burbank
  7. Yummy Cupcakes, Santa Monica
  8. Vanilla Bake Shop, Santa Monica
  9. My Little Cupcake, Studio City

It’s also come to my attention that there is some concern about my methods and the criteria for making my decisions. First, let’s get the boring stuff out of the way. We pay for every single, ridiculously overpriced ($3.25?!) cupcake. None of the bakeries know they are being reviewed during my visits. I try to purchase at least three cupcakes at every bakery, my chosen flavors usually being chocolate, vanilla and red velvet. More often than not, I buy four or more and promise them to my friends, family and co-workers with the caveat that they give me their very honest opinion. You might be wondering what we’re looking for when tasting cupcakes. Well, we’re wondering too. As many times as I’ll repeat that the most important element of a good cupcake is an appropriate cake-to-frosting ratio, I’m frequently surprised. Take Yummy Cupcakes for instance. Moist, sweet cake with gobs of frosting - too much in my opinion - it’s heavy sugar content wrecks havoc on the gums. There was a backlash I hope to never relive for my review of Yummy. On the other side are bakeries like Dots and Dainties. Dots has a very thin layer of frosting that is more of a sugar coating, thin and barely to the edges, whereas Dainties utilizes a chocolate ganache and flavored whipped cream. When it comes to cupcakes, its always a matter of personal taste, and this is mine.

Fact of the matter is that cupcakes are a childhood pleasure that you get to carry into adulthood, which is why people like them so much and are willing to pay upwards of $3.00 for one. Is $3.00 too much to pay to buy back a summer birthday party and a trip on the moonbounce? I don’t think so, and it’s still cheaper than a pack of smokes.
