Interview: Swinging Downtowners

March 25th, 2008 Written by: Big Al, the gal· No Comments

Urban Golfer sfslimIs your concern for your golf swing preventing you from moving to downtown LA? Well, fret not fore your golf score!

As I have never personally caused a club to come in contact with a golf ball (though I have tried), I asked a golf enthusiast about his experience living downtown and trying to maintain a decent swing.

Big Al, the gal: Have you found a driving range that is close to your downtown residence? A golf course?

Griffin: Absolutely! The Aroma driving range on Wilshire in Koreatown opens at 7 a.m. (for an early session before work).

I believe the closest golf course is the Griffith Park golf course just up the 5 and exit Los Feliz Blvd (also a driving range here that opens at 6 a.m.).

Big Al, the gal: What has been your experience with these places?

Griffin: I’ve only been to the Aroma driving range. It is a smooth experience. They have plenty of parking below the range. The driving ranges are above on Levels 4, 5, 6, and 7.

You pay for a card that slides into the machine by your where you hit the balls. All of a sudden a ball rises from a hole to take a seat on your tee. After you hit it into the horizon, you look down and another ball is already on the tee! No more filling a bucket of balls up and carrying it around.

As soon as you get tired you eject your card and can use the remaining balance another day. When you have a bucket of balls, you feel obligated to hit the whole bucket.

Big Al, the gal: How do you combine your golfing hobby with your downtown lifestyle?

Griffin: I can either get up early and hit at the range, or hit after work. Rounds of golf are saved for the weekend when I have more time. But I can certainly get enough practice during the week.

Big Al, the gal: What are the drawbacks to living downtown as a golfer? Are there any advantages?

Griffin: No drawbacks since there is a range and course so close by. Advantages are the convenience.

Big Al, the gal: What advice, encouragement, and/or discouragement would you give to other golfers who are interested in living downtown?

Griffin: Look up these 2 places online and go visit to give it a try. If you want to get better, you have to practice and Aroma and Griffith are 2 great places to practice. Venture further afield on the weekends to play other courses.

So there we have it. Yuppies CAN lead a happy and fulfilling life while they live in downtown Los Angeles. What a relief.
