The Blank Theatre’s Living Room Series, does a weekly presentation of staged readings of new plays. Next, Monday, March 31, Blank will be presenting a reading of Drew Larimore’s new play OUT OF ASKJA, which has been chosen for the 2008 Telluride Playwrights Festival in Telluride, Colorado.
Larimore says about OUT OF ASKJA: “I initially went to explore Iceland as a country and produce some travel writing based on my experiences there, but my love-hate relationship with the country and how hard it was to navigate (its rocky terrain, temperamental weather, high currency) made it very difficult, at times, to present the country in a positive light.”
OUT OF ASKJA was written several months after Larimore’s return as an attempt to bring the magical world of Iceland to the American stage and subconsciously, as well as his own thoughts about the country through Caroline Miller, the play’s protagonist.
OUT OF ASKJA is the story of Caroline Miller, an American travel writer, who falls off the edge of a volcano in Askja, Iceland and injures herself so severely she is forced to be cared for by the volcano’s overseer, Hal Tanker. The two strike up an unexpected romance and their seemingly similar backgrounds make them prime candidates for what it takes to live in Askja’s difficult environment. Attempting to research the lives of two lost explorers who lived in Askja’s volcano a hundred years ago, Caroline and Hal return back to the volcano only to be met by Iceland’s premier travel authority, a troll-like character named Thor. Both Hal and Caroline struggle to make sense of their misplacement and particularly, their relationship to one another, while all three characters no matter what time of day or hour of the night - are desperately trying to get out of Askja.
