It was simply a matter of time. Ten years ago, the only thing in Culver City was Surfas restaurant supply, Target and an In-N-Out. There was also The Plunge, and of course, National Charity League’s Ticktocker Thrift Shop where they sold ancient prom dresses and balding fox stoles in the “Gold Room.” There was virtually no reason to venture into Culver City unless you worked for Sony. When they opened the humongous Target Greatland in Manhattan Beach, there was even less of a reason.
With the redevelopment of Culver City and the influx of businesses and new restaurants like Ford’s Filling Station, Tender Greens and one of Los Angeles Magazine’s best restaurants of 2008, Fraîche, Culver City could even been considered a bit of a scene. As stated above, it was simply a matter of time before the requisite cupcake shop moved in.
Hotcakes Bakes is not simply a cupcake shop the way Yummy or Dots is, they also make cakes and cookies and treats for all occasions. The look is very homemade; in fact, upon walking in I felt confident that with a star tip and a Ziploc bag, I too could recreate a Hotcakes cupcake. As usual, I purchased my chocolate, vanilla and red velvet cupcakes, throwing in a carrot cupcake because it looked so much better than the lemon with urine yellow frosting.
There isn’t much seating at Hotcakes, which works for me as I like to eat my cupcakes in privacy. Carrot was first, and by far the best Hotcakes has to offer. Not as good as Dots, but certainly tasty. The red velvet and chocolate were both middling and I’d picked them up at the church bake sale, I would have been very happy with my purchase. However, if you’re going to sell something I can make at home, I want it to be of superior flavor, quality and texture. The vanilla was, well…vanilla.
If you’re in the neighborhood, maybe after a meal at Leaf leaves you starving, definitely stop by Hotcakes Bakes. Skip the vanilla, get the carrot cupcake and be sure to try the pecan bars.
