The city of Naples, in Italy, had a problem. Local dumps were full, and there was also some mob-related troubles involving waste-disposal in the area. As a result, people resorted to illicit dumping and even burning of their waste. So it’s only natural that after not too long, horrible chemicals found their way into the food chain.
Why should you care?
You should care because Naples is the world’s largest source of buffalo mozzarella. And high levels of the carcinogen were found in certain samples!
Now far be it from me to be a scaremonger. I’m just about informing, so in the interst of full discolsure, here’s what we know so far:
- France, Singapore and Japan banned imports of the product as soon as news broke.
- The EU commision moved quickly to investigate, and found no real threat to consumers.
- The Italian Health Ministry acted promptly and is working with the EU commission to identify and resolve the source of the problem.
- 25 farms in the Campania region of Italy have been singled out as contaminated out of over 130 checked.
- France has since re-allowed the import. No decision has been made by Japan or Singapore.
So the bottom line is this: there may or may not be some tainted buffalo mozzarella in the US. Be warned.
