Looks like British supermarket giant Tesco is struggling in its first foray in the new world. Their new concept grocery store, Fresh & Easy, has slowly been spreading across the States since November. The stores offer “preservative-free products, fresh produce and ready-to-eat family meals in a simple and small store format” and are somewhat similar to our beloved Trader Joe’s. Well, except for the whole success thing.
The OC Register has been following the progress of the chain for some time, and the most recent development does not bode well for those of you hoping to check one out soon:
The British retailer has announced plans to put the brakes on store openings for at least three months while the new chain looks to improve its first American-based operations, company executive Simon Uwins said. The retailer has opened 59 Fresh & Easy markets since November, including six in Orange County.
Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that each and every item is more or less individually shrinkwrapped? Or perhaps it’s the very nature of the store that’s confusing consumers?
Either way, don’t expect them to be cropping up around the corner from you anytime soon.
