Maybe you have heard about the Farmers’ Market which takes place each Wednesday from 11:30 AM until 2:00 PM. But have you ever trotted over to check it out?
You’ll see all the grumpy nasty people who bump you as they speed walk to their office or miss your kneecaps with their Mercedes bumpers by inches on their way to the parking deck. BUT! When they visit a farmers’ market, suddenly everyone turns nice! It’s delightful.
While the market only takes up the sidewalk along one block (West 5th Street btwn South Grand Avenue and South Flower Street), you’ll find a surprising variety of merchandise.
Closer to Grand, you’ll find folks cooking up hot delicacies which you can munch for lunch. Here again you’ll be surprised at the variety in such a small area. The aroma of freshly made local food is yummy nummy … to use an industry term.
Once you order your plate of yummy numminess, keep walking toward Flower and you’ll find some clothing vendors. You are also going to start seeing some of those big black velvet trays full of silver rings. Would it be a farmers’ market without those vendors? If you can ever find one of those trays which does not contain at least one silver snake ring and one silver skull ring, let me know. I’ll give you a dollar (maybe … is this legally binding?).
If you keep walking toward Flower, you’ll see fresh baked bread, nut, and produce stands. And flower retailers too. I told you this thing is varied.
Keep in mind that vendors aren’t necessarily certified organic farmers simply because they participate in a farmers’ market. Unless they specifically state that they are organic, they aren’t. It’s unlikely that an organic farmer wouldn’t jump all over posting a sign advertising it. They work hard to get that certification.
However, there is also a lot to be said for buying local. The food will be fresher, will have been able to ripen on the plant longer (thereby gaining more nutrients), and will not have required as much fuel to arrive in front of you.
All political correctness and environmental mindedness aside, this farmers’ market is just plain fun to visit. It’s nice to see Angelinos at their nicest, and the food is fresh, delicious, and cheap!
Go! Have fun! Go now! What are you still doing reading this? Go!
