Dodger Beat: Starting the Season Strong

April 4th, 2008 Written by: Anthony· No Comments

dodger beat - 08-04-03 opening dayThe Dodgers came home for opening day and won their first series against the rival Giants and their first 2 out of 3 games. Not a bad way to start the season. It was a packed house, it was a sea of blue and when the fans did the wave it actually did look like the ocean (if the water here was clean and blue that is).

The Dodgers won on opening day 5-0 behind a strong pitching performance from Brad Penny (6 2/3 scoreless innings), a two-run home run from Jeff Kent and Furcal chipped in with 3 hits and an RBI. The stadium was sold out and the energy was strong, the way opening day should be.

The Dodgers had to work for their second win, but win they did, by the score of 3-2. The game was tied 2-2 in the 9th until Delwyn Young hit an infield single that plated the winning run. Lowe pitched great, tossing 6 scoreless inning, but was knocked out of the game in the 7th (with the bases loaded) when a come backer hit him on the left leg. The Giants ended up scoring 2 runs in the top of the 7th. The Dodgers answered right back in the bottom of the inning with 2 runs of their own on a 2 run Furcal single. The funniest moment of the game had to be when third base coach Larry Bowa went crazy and threw a big tantrum when he was ejected for stepping outside the coaches box.

The 3rd game was close, but the Giants won 2-1 in a rained delayed game. The Dodgers scored their only run on a James Loney RBI single in the 4th inning. The Giants scored their two runs on a error by left fielder Andre Ethier and a sacrifice fly by Randy Winn. Not much offense for either team, as they combined for only 13 hits.

The Dodgers should feel good about their chances in the NL West. Although winning the first series of the season doesn’t get you in the playoffs, it’s still important. You start the season off on the right foot and the most important part you instill confidence in your team and the fans.
