Celebrity Real Estate

Matthew Perry has bought himself a new home in the Hollywood Hills. Perry paid $4.475 million for the home, located at 2415 Carman Crest Drive. The property is Perry’s third in the L.A. area, the other two located in Malibu and West Hollywood. The new home covers 4100 square feet on a 0.34 acre lot and features disappearing walls of glass.

Country superstar Kenny Chesney has found himself a new pad in Malibu. Located at 22355 Carbon Mesa Road, the new property set Chesney back $7.4 million. It covers 3723 square feet and sits on an estate that features whitewater views and sizeable gardens.

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver have bought 25 acres of land in Santa Barbara County for $4.7 million. The land is in the Rancho Alegre development project, which aims to turn an old ranch into private estates, of which the Schwarzenegger’s will actually be one of the smallest.

News

Democratic and Republican senators have reached a tentative agreement on a housing bill to provide relief to people under threat of foreclosure. The bill provides for $100 million to pay for counseling for people trying to avoid having their homes foreclosed, loans to local housing agencies so that they can refinance loans, and over $4 billion to local governments to buy foreclosed properties. It has already faced criticism from several sources. The Joint Committee on Taxation, a nonpartisan group responsible for determining the financial effects of Congressional legislation, released an estimate which showed that businesses would receive $25 billion in benefits while homeowners received only $3 billion, bringing criticism from consumer advocates, among many others. White House spokeswoman Karen Perino spoke out against the bill, saying that it would bail out speculators and lenders at the expense of normal people “who play by the rules.” Bush may actually be honest on this one, as many of his top donors were corporations that would be helped immensely by the bailout. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson has, however, changed his position on bailouts from a strong NO to a willingness to consider a bailout plan.
