Long gone are the days of the food court! Well, at least in my eyes.
The Sherman Oaks mall (once an open-aired plaza sort of place dappled with ice cream cone carriers and pigeons in flight) is now a mega monster in the Westfield conglomerate, boasting, ironically, one of the finest, most gourmet burgers this side of your summer grill.
Barney’s Burgers is a Bay Area born delight that I am astonished made it to the humble Valley, let alone one of the most non-foodie realms of existence. But, while getting creepily more and more polished and waxed from it’s Westfield association, the mall anchors itself firmly with Barney’s enormous burger menu and thick, soft steak fries, my favorite! Pretty much everything they serve on the red meat menu they also offer in chicken sandwich, turkey and veggie burger form, as well as malts and shakes and all those unnecessary necessities that go with a cla
ssic burger.
Among the many drool-worthy inspirations are a few of my favorites, that I can mightily vouch for - The Sunshine Burger with aged cheddar cheese, sprouts and avocado on whole wheat bread (it’s like being back in hippieville!) The Popeye Burger with fresh sauteed spinach (divine) and feta cheese, or the Alpine Burger with sauteed mushroom, Swiss cheese and onions. They also got pesto Burgers flying around there, burgers with Ortega chilies, burgers with gobs of guacamole and “Paris” burgers with blue cheese. Are you getting the drift?
The setting is surprisingly pleasant and the waitresses are always sweet and humble. You might have to deal with a few crying kids, or some ambient music bleeding in from the background, but it’s worth for a list of homemade style hamburgers that would rival any Hamlet around. They do for burgers what The Griddle Cafe does for pancakes, know what I’m say’n?
Just one tip, if you are a bacon snob/bacon lover, well… you know the kind of bacon that melts on your tongue like it’s evaporating in bacon-grease goodness when you take a bite? Ya, their bacon isn’t like that. It’s just sort of… hard, and chewy. Sigh. Maybe that’s because I asked for it extra crispy.
Other than that you can’t go wrong! When you need to get your Dad a birthday tie or buy a new bra at The Gap head to the mall and see why Barney’s is so damn popular in the Bay Area (they have a wall of awards to prove it). Just don’t go to the food court, they’re on the bottom floor. Thems the big leagues baby!
They also have restaurants in Santa Monica and Brentwood if you’re a Westside kid.
