You can argue that Long Beach isn’t Los Angeles if you want, but it’s technically a member of the LA County team and a qualifier for this contest. The LBC has come a long way in the past decade and does several things well: the aquarium, the Grand Pre and rap stars. The city also can also add cupcakes to the list.
Located in the trendy Belmont Shores area of Long Beach, the two-year old Frosted Cupcakery sells 1200 cupcakes on an average Saturday and double that if hired for a wedding. My favorite part of the arrangement is that all cupcakes ($2.95 each and 14 flavors in all) are offered every day of the week, with monthly specials. Far too many cupcake shops only offer certain flavors on different days of the week, and it really makes it a hassle to get what you want, when you want it.
Our team of cupcake tasting professionals (otherwise known as my girlfriends) sampled the following flavors: chocolate/chocolate buttercream, red velvet/cream cheese, carrot/cream cheese, lemon/cream cheese, royal white/nutella buttercream, chocolate/mint chip buttercream and strawberry/cream cheese. We felt confident as we walked out of the cupcake shop that we would have enough product to thoroughly and fairly judge the shop.
Judge we did. The consensus? The red velvet and royal white cake tasted the exact same â moist, but lacking in flavor. Chocolate chocolate tasted the same as mint chocolate and while both very tasty, nothing spectacular. The carrot was tainted with pineapple and mimicked banana bread in texture as opposed to cake. Strawberry tasted as strawberry cake does â like artificial coloring. After a horrendous run-in at My Little Cupcake, I’ve now come to grips with the fact that I will never be a good judge of strawberry cake â I just don’t like it. The big surprise was lemon. Chock full of zest, the cake had tremendous flavor and zing.
What makes this cupcake shop stand out is the frosting. All of the frostings were light, yet thick with good flavor and a balance between sweetness and richness. Of the six tasters, only one had to scrape off the excess, which says a lot because they were lavishly decorated.
It’s a great little spot to drop into when you’re in the area. And if you’re walking your dog, be sure to pick up a chicken-flavored “pupcake” â three for $2.00!

Can’t tell if you liked it or not…The actual description doesn’t sound enticing but then you say it’s worth checking out…confused.
