American Idol: Results Show Shocker

April 11th, 2008 Written by: Andrew· No Comments

Finally a result worth waiting for.  AIAndrewMichaelJohns

If there was ever a reason to sit through the pointless drivel of an “American Idol” results show this was it. In what has to be the most shocking result in the last few seasons, Michael Johns was booted from the show after his first time in the bottom three.

Of course, the viewers had to suffer through an hour of B-list celebrity cameos and commercials, I mean, music videos until they got there.

But that isn’t entirely true, because this was “Idol Gives Back” week which meant an additional 150 minutes of performances that would make a variety show from the 1950’s blush.

It’s extremely cynical to impugn an institution like “Idol” for using its popularity for such a good cause, but couldn’t they have done it in a more entertaining way? How about taking 20 minutes out of every results show (it’s not like they don’t have about 40 minutes of glorified dead air available) instead of 2 hours and 30 minutes of network airtime for Miley Cyrus to sling her borderline talented self about the stage.

But this pixie wasn’t the worst of that evening’s acts. Teri Hatcher sang Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats”. On national TV. This performance surely would have made the blooper reel from the audition shows and “Idol” decided to use it in its tent pole. Horrifying.

Other bits of filler included a roast of Simon Cowell from Jimmy Kimmel who appeared to simply take what Ryan’s been saying about him for years and just make it a little more vulgar and “Heart” inexplicably singing “Barracuda” with backing vocals by the talentless wonder that is Fergie.

The evening wasn’t completely horrible. There was one bright spot and one bright spot alone: Annie Lennox’s haunting rendition of “Many Rivers”. There isn’t a song on this planet that Lennox can’t sing and sing wonderfully and her performance contrasting with a night of clunky amateurs only made her seem all the more superior.

It seems that the 150 minutes afforded to “Idol Gives Back” were not enough, however, as viewers were subjected to deleted scenes from the previous evening’s train wreck on the results show. John McCain was surprisingly funny and not un-dead, but the rest should have stayed on the cutting room floor.

Then there was the result. A stunner. Michael Johns probably wasn’t good enough to win, but he had just come off his two best performances in the last two weeks and his rendition of “Dream On” certainly wasn’t the worst of last night. It’s a shame that a truly humble guy who could really rip when he got it going will finish behind the likes of Kristy Lee Cook.

Usually “Idol” results are pretty predictable, but tonight’s was a true shocker. For one of the better singers to go out after giving a performance in the middle of the pack is nearly unheard of, making for an elimination that worth the wait.

Almost.
