The Lakers begin the playoffs this week after a superb weekend showing. Also in the playoffs are the Ducks, who had a miserable week, falling into an 0-2 hole. The Dodgers and Angels both have a full slate of games against opponents they should beat.
NBA
Lakers
- vs. Sacramento, Tuesday, 7:30, FSW
- vs. Undetermined Playoff Opponent later in week
The Lakers wrapped up an extremely impressive week with victories over both New Orleans and San Antonio over the weekend. They currently hold the number one seed in the West and the tiebreaker over the Hornets, their nearest competition. The Tuesday game against Sacramento should be a tune-up for the postseason, which begins on Saturday. The Nuggets are the most likely opponent for the Lakers, though they could still face Dallas or Golden State. Both Denver and Golden State pose easy matchups for the Lakers, but Dallas would be a little tougher. Either way, the Lakers should make it through to the second round with no real problems.
Clippers
- at New Orleans, Tuesday, 5:00, KTLA
- at Houston, Wednesday, 5:30, FSPT
The Clippers could do the Lakers a big favor by beating New Orleans on Tuesday, thereby ensuring the Lakers of the number one seed. But that’s not likely to happen, nor is a victory over the Rockets. The Clippers will end the season with two more losses to add on to their current losing streak of five.
MLB
Dodgers
- vs. Pittsburgh, Monday, 7:10, FSPT
- vs. Pittsburgh, Tuesday, 7:10, FSPT
- vs. Pittsburgh, Wednesday, 7:10, FSPT
- at Atlanta, Friday, 4:35, KCAL
- at Atlanta, Saturday, 12:55, FOX
- at Atlanta, Sunday, 10:35 AM, TBS
With some of their key players slumping to begin the season and Joe Torre refusing to start one of his best players, the Dodgers need something to kick start their season before they fall too far behind division-leading Arizona. The Pirates may be exactly that: though they have started the season reasonably well, they are one of the worst teams in the league and will have two of their worst pitchers pitching in the series. The Dodgers should win two out of three in the series before travelling to Atlanta for the weekend, where they will face a much stronger Braves team, which has also struggled to get its season off the ground.
Angels
- at Texas, Monday, 5:05, FSW
- at Texas, Tuesday, 11:05 AM, FSW
- vs. Kansas City, Wednesday, 7:05, KCOP
- vs. Kansas City, Thursday, 7:05, FSW
- vs. Seattle, Friday, 7:05, FSW
- vs. Seattle, Saturday, 6:05, KCOP
- vs. Seattle, Sunday, 12:35, KCOP
The Angels have begun their season better than the Dodgers have, but are still only second in a division they should win easily. This week features a strange set of two-game series against teams the Angels should have no problem with. The weekend’s series against Seattle may be tougher, but this is an excellent chance for the Angels to really kick into gear.
NHL
Ducks
- at Dallas, Tuesday, 5:30
- at Dallas, Thursday, 5:00
- vs. Dallas, Friday, 7:30, Versus
- at Dallas, Sunday, 10:00 AM
The Ducks opened the playoffs with two comprehensive defeats at home to the Stars. The team needs to get things together quickly to avoid an early exit. They should at least make a series out of it with a couple of victories this week, if not completely take over as they can when they are on their game.
