If you’ve been on a Los Angeles freeway this week, which I am sure most of you have, unwillingly at best, you might have seen digital signs with the slogan “Teen Driving Safety Week, April 14 - 18″ written across in orange glowing letters.

Turns out legislation was introduced to mark the week of April 14 as Teen Driving Safety Week in California. The Teen Driving Safety Week was introduced along with Impact Teen Drivers, a new public awareness and education program created by the Californian Association of Highway Patrolmen, the California Teachers Association and California Casualty, a state based insurance company.

“In California 77 percent of the 16-year-old drivers in accidents are at fault. Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death of teens, accounting for 40 percent of all teen deaths. One in 13 drivers has an accident in his or her first year of driving. The sad statistics go on and it’s time to change that,” said state Assemblyman Pedro Nava (D-Santa Barbara) who introduced the legislation, in The Acorn, a publication serving Agoura Hills, Calabasas and surrounding areas.

The program planned to distribute Impact Teen Drivers classroom materials this past Monday, which included a campaign booklet, a series of posters to display in classrooms and a DVD with short features about the consequences of distracted driving and other items.

The Impact Teen Drivers
has a number of tips, information, resources and a memorial wall honoring teens who have lost their lives in driving incidents.

In a report posted on the California Department of Motor Vehicles website, California tops the list of states with the most fatalities in crashes involving young drivers, aged 15 to 20, followed closely by Texas.
