On Sunday, May 18th the Marine Mammal Care Center in San Pedro will be holding their annual Seal Day festivity. Celebrating its 16th year, this event’s proceeds will be used for the rescue of sick, injured or orphaned seals and hopefully returning them to the wild.
The center is not only a hospital for rescuing seals but in combination with the Center for Marine Studies it’s also an instructional venue sponsoring school group tours and providing courses for students and teachers. They began operating in October 1992, by an agreement originated between Harcourt Brace, an educational supply company, and the Los Angeles Unified School District.
They are also a member of the Oiled Wildlife Care Network. In case of an oil spill in the Los Angeles or Ventura County waters, the center would help in the rehabilitation of seals exposed to petroleum products.
I’ve visited the center on several occasions because my young daughter, Judy, is interested in animals. On one visit we found their wish list next to their donation box and on returning we donated some of the affordable items on their list. One of the things they appreciated most were the rolls of paper towels we provided. So something as simple as that would be helpful.
They also have a small gift shop selling seal themed items, like stationary cards with beautifully photographed pictures, which Judy enthusiastically bought with her allowance. We’ll definitely be attending the Seal Day event because it not only sounds enjoyable but it also benefits the center.
It will be taking place from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at 3601 Gaffey Street located on the Angels Gate Recreation Center on Fort MacArthur. There will be informational booths and live animal feedings including guest speakers. Along with drawings for prizes, live music and refreshments to add to the experience. Therefore if you want to help out a good cause and have fun at the same time go enjoy Seal Day!
