Hopkins vs. Calzaghe

Calzaghe 1Week after week HBO Boxing has been putting together some of the great fights of the past several years. It has been all the more fantastic because the majority of these boxing events are free (if you have cable). Of course HBO cost a little extra each month but I’m talking about Pay Per View. Special boxing events are generally pretty pricy and if they’re on every weekend the total will begin to mount faster than you can imagine.

Hopkins 1This Saturday the 19th is going to be one hell of a fight. Bernard (the executioner) Hopkins and the Welsh madman Joe Calzaghe are going to lay it down in the ring. My money is on Hopkins, a bigger puncher and much better at defense, I think the Executioner is going to have blood on the end of his axe. This is not to say that Calzaghe is not a fine boxer, in fact I enjoy watching him beat the crap out of all that Europe has to offer. Unfortunately this time around Calzaghe has to fight a Yank and after Floyd Mayweather Jr. destroyed Ricky Hatton, for any Englishmen to get respect in America they are going to have to earn it in the ring against the best WE have to offer. So far the Brits have had a rough time standing up against our stronger and sleeker boxers.

For some reason the English seem to add up these undefeated records while fighting in their home countries and then they take the hop over the pond to try and put their records to the test. This time around I don’t hear as much propaganda and hoopla about the impressive 44-0 record with 32 knockouts. Maybe they are afraid that the greater the rise the harder the fall, well at least that was the case for poor Ricky Hatton who has since not even been mentioned other than to again bring up his one loss. Hopkins on the other hand with his 48-4-1 record, also with 32 KO’s, has tasted the bitterness of defeat and has had to come back from extreme adversity within a fight to achieve victory. I’m not sure that Joe has ever really been tested in the same way that Hopkins can say he has. One thing is for sure that this Saturday it is on. This could be one of those classic all-time events or it could be a sad and dodgy one-sided ass kicking, we will just have to wait and see.

Calzaghe 2There is a very good chance that one of these two great fighters will at least get knocked down. I’m not sure it will be Hopkins because he rarely sticks his neck out far enough to get it chopped off, but Calzaghe does have that thing that makes fighters want to come forward and try and take a shot. Joe tends to turn into a bit of a showboat in front of his home crowds and there will be a shit load of his fans around on Saturday, so we will probably see some of Joe’s famous shoulder shimmies or dance routines. Bernard is no stranger to the occasional show of arrogance and swagger, so perhaps with two volatile, show-offs in the same ring, the sparks might just fly. You all know that I’ll be tuning in to see what happens and if you already have cable and I hope if you do, you have HBO because if you don’t you’re very much missing out on some of the finer things in life. This Saturday the 19th at 9:45 ET on HBO Hopkins and Calzaghe are going to put on a terrific show and let me tell you something folks if you miss it then you’re missing out on some great boxing. CHECK IT OUT! See Ya All
