The Republican funded Freedom’s Watch, supposed to be a counterpart to the liberal Move On, is imploding, plagued by gridlock and infighting. Sound familiar? Funded by casino mogul Samuel Adelson, Freedom’s Watch was supposed to be an important advocate of Republican issues in an election year. The problem was, they couldn’t agree on the issues, and when they did, Adelson didn’t want to fund them, showing rare sense for a billionaire, since their first idea was bad-mouthing Iran and pushing for a military strike against Tehran.
The problem, really, is that the group is misnamed. If you are really going to sum up the Republican agenda in a single phrase, let’s be honest, it would be: Let’s go Kick Somebody’s Butt. Go after those stupid women who choose not to have babies. Stop those degenerate gay people from getting married like regular folks. Get rid of those activist judges who think the Navy’s war games shouldn’t take preference over the health of marine mammals. Kill the insurgents, which covers anybody who protests our invading their country, and of course, the dreaded liberals. Deport every immigrant who arrives illegally, never mind how all our ancestors got here. Shut up all those silly scientists who keep telling us the sky is falling. Cut down all the forests, because who needs trees when you can make money on lumber. And kill all those pesky animals who insist on living around us as if they had some right to be there. Wild horses, buffalo and wolves, let’s just exterminate them.
When Obama says its time for a change, he’s talking metamorphosis, the ultimate Democratic ideal: let’s all get together and address our problems, instead of blaming them on someone else and getting mad about it. The United States motto, after all, is “e pluribus unum,” the many in the one. That was what the founding fathers intended, a union, of interests and ideals, creating a win-win situation for everybody. Our country has gone far afield from our ideals many times in our history, but perhaps never so far as now, when we have become in the eyes of the world the rogue nation, our leaders hated on a global scale. This is a time for change, and interestingly, a little child shall lead them. Actually, a lot of children, little and big, who support Barack Obama and often change their parents’ minds. Why? Maybe because as a country, we feel it’s time to stop kicking butt and start solving problems. Kids know this instinctively as being a good thing, since their survival depends on a global change of course. As do those of us who love America, and want our country to once more be what our founders meant it to be–a shining example for the rest of the world.
