The Lakers continue their march through the first round. Both baseball teams have put together good weeks and look to continue their success. We have one of our last chances to see a Los Angeles sports icon, Oscar de la Hoya, who has found himself an easy fight. Find out about all of this week’s big sporting events in L.A.

NBA

Lakers

  • at Denver, Monday, 7:30, TNT
  • vs Denver, Wednesday, time TBA, ESPN (if necessary)
  • at Denver, Friday, time TBA, ESPN (if necessary)
  • vs Denver, Sunday, time TBA, ABC (if necessary)

The Lakers have dominated the first three games of their first-round series against the Nuggets, controlling the game both offensively and defensively. They managed to hold Denver all-stars Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson to a combined 10 of 38 shooting performance last game, which allowed the Lakers to cruise to an easy 24-point victory. The fourth game should not be much more of a test for Kobe and company, allowing them to rest up for the next round, with the possible return of Andrew Bynum against what will most likely be the Jazz, but could still be the Rockets if they can dig themselves out of a 3-1 hole in their series.

MLB

Dodgers

  • at Florida, Tuesday, 4:10, KCAL
  • at Florida, Wednesday, 4:10, FSPT
  • at Florida, Thursday, 9:10 AM, FSPT
  • at Colorado, Friday, 6:05, FSPT
  • at Colorado, Saturday, 5:05, FSPT
  • at Colorado, Sunday, 12:05, KCAL

The Dodgers continue to be extremely inconsistent, looking wonderful one game, disastrous the next. They did manage to sweep Colorado over the weekend, helped by a 10-run first inning on Saturday night and the extremely rare sight of Russell Martin at third base after Nomar went down in extra innings. The Marlins currently lead the NL East, but lack the talent to keep up their lead over the whole season, so this week is a good chance for the Dodgers to keep their momentum going.

Angels

  • vs Oakland, Monday, 7:05, FSW
  • vs Oakland, Tuesday, 7:05, FSW
  • vs Oakland, Wednesday, 7:05, FSW
  • vs Oakland, Thursday, 7:05, FSW
  • vs Baltimore, Friday, 7:05, KCOP
  • vs Baltimore, Saturday, 12:45, FOX
  • vs Baltimore, Sunday, 12:35, KCOP

The Angels won both of their series last week against some of baseball’s best, the Red Sox and Indians. They still have not managed to create any space between themselves and the A’s, a team few expected to contend this year. The A’s have added Frank Thomas to make their offense more potent, but the Angels should still be able to win the series. The Orioles are still tied at the top of the AL East, even with the Red Sox and ahead of the Yankees. That won’t continue, as they are baaaad and playing over their heads thus far.

Boxing

  • Andre Dirrell vs. Anthony Hanshaw and Antonio DeMarco vs. Juan Castaneda, Santa Ynez, 8 PM (11 PM on TV), Showtime

Dirrell and Hanshaw are both top middleweight prospects with a combined one loss on their records. Neither has fought a fighter as good as the other, so this fight will be a great chance to see their chances of becoming stars.

Oscar de la Hoya vs. Steve Forbes and Jorge Linares vs. Billy Dib, Home Depot Center, 7:00, HBO

This fight is supposed to be merely a tune-up for de la Hoya before he fights Floyd Mayweather again in September. Forbes is a former champion, but is way over his head with de la Hoya and at 147 pounds. He has a chance for a victory, but it’s extremely small. He was chosen to be an easy victory for de la Hoya. Linares-Dibb is a flyweight championship fight. Both fighters are undefeated, but Linares has faced tougher competition and should come through with a victory.

MLS

Chivas USA

  • at Houston, Saturday, 5:30, FSW

Fresh off an embarrassing defeat at the hands of their cross-town rivals, Chivas USA heads to Houston to face last year’s champion the Dynamo, who have started this year off in horrible fashion, having failed to win any of their first five games. This is a chance for Chivas USA to get their feet back under them after a disappointing start.

Galaxy

  • at Real Salt Lake, Saturday, 6:00, FSW

The Galaxy should be feeling good about themselves after Saturday’s dismantling of Chivas USA. Now they have to face perhaps the most absurdly-named team in sports, there being nothing royal whatsoever about Salt Lake City soccer. Real Salt Lake is tough, but the Galaxy should be able to win.
