Movie Industry News: You’ll Laugh, You’ll Cry, You Probably Won’t Care That Much

  • Evil Puppy from ConanEvil Puppy from Conan
  • DelToro08-04-28Guillermo del Toro is officially going to direct the adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit. Oh, yawn. I mean - yay! More Tolkien movies. I think my ass is already falling asleep. Del Toro is a good choice, though. I hope he can find some way to incorporate that creepy guy with his eyeballs in his hands from Pan’s Labryinth, because that guy was awesome.
  • According to some guy in the L.A. Times that calls himself Mr. Movie Projector, going to the movies is “still a bargain.” While I can agree with the assessment that the experience of watching a movie in a dark theatre on a huge screen (unless you slum it at the Los Feliz 4)with a bunch of strangers is decidedly different and cooler than watching a DVD at home, I certainly cannot agree that shelling out $12 to see “Juno” is a bargain. Sorry, Charlie, I’m not convinced. Until Wes Anderson comes out with something new, I’m going to keep getting my movies bootlegged on Alvarado. (note to law enforcement: this is a joke…)
  • Ooh, an adaptation of Mein Kampf! Can you say “courting controversy”?

  • Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in Baby Mama were number one at the box office. Even though the movie may not be that great, it makes me feel kind of warm and fuzzy that two chicks can reign supreme in Hollywood.
  • P.T. Anderson and Jackie Chan both signed with William Morris last week with Anderson ditching Endeavor and Chan abandoning CAA. I would think the Boogie Nights director’s departure would lower Endeavor’s cool cred at least a little bit. But I doubt Ari is sweating it too much.
  • And finally, Jimmy Fallon will replace Conan O’Brien in 2009 when O’Brien leaves for The Tonight Show. This makes me want to cry a little. Not just because I hate Jimmy Fallon (though I really do), but also because I know that Conan isn’t going to be allowed to be as funny on the earlier show. At the very least, Masturbating Bear will be retired and that is tragic enough.

I totally agree with you about the creepy guy with the eyes in the hands from Pan’s Labyrinth! Best part of the movie! By the way what’s with the Mein Kampf link? Nothing came up on my computer except another link for Horny Matches. Horny Matches and Mein Kampf? Lord what a pairing!!!!!
