Music Interview: The Vibrants Come to LA

The English are coming! The Vibrants are a new, up and coming band from the UK has landed in LA to begin their North American Tour. With Giles Farnham on vocals, Sam Holt on guitar, Steve Devlin on bass, Laurie Langan on the organ, and James Hayward on drums, these guys are sure to rock your socks off. Pulling from influences like The Who, Talking Heads and The Police, The Vibrants are starting to build a lot of buzz all over the globe.

They will be performing tonight at the MusExpo at the House of Blues on Sunset at 11:45pm. If you can’t make that show, they’ve got plenty of LA shows to follow. They will be playing at Club Moscow at Boardner’s on May 7th at 10pm, On the Rox on May 8th at 10pm, The Prospector Bar in Long Beach on May 13th at 10pm, and The Cat Club in West Hollywood on May 15th, at 10pm.

CityZine was lucky enough to speak with the band and ask them about touring, the differences between LA and UK audiences, and a whole lot more.

Could you give a brief description of your band?

The Vibrants five piece UK act based in Twickenham.

Who are some of your idols and why?

Joe Strummer, David Byrne, Pete Townsend (theWho), and David Bowie, why because they kept their artistic integrity and individuality while playing the music they wanted to do.

What’s your favorite place to visit while you’re in LA?

The venues and music stores on the Sunset Strip.

What is the biggest different between LA and UK audiences? Which do you prefer?

English audience are quieter and LA audience are more receptive and more involved in the music.

How did you come up with the name for your band? How many names did you have to go through before deciding on this one? What were come of the other contenders?

We were reading a book on London and the first sentence was that the City of London was such a vibrant city… so we kept the name.

If you could rid the world of one song, what would it be?

Liverpool Eight by Ringer Starr.

How do you get ready for a live show?

The band has 30 minutes of band time together and then comes together in a group hug and wishes each other good luck.

What’s your favorite song to play live? Are there any songs the audience particularly like?

Favorite song is our newest release ‘First Move’ and the most requested by out fans.

Dead or alive. What 5 acts would you have play with you at a festival?

Talking Heads, E street Band, The Who, Velvet Underground, the Doors.

What’s your most memorable experience on the road story?

Playing Ottawa, Canada in June 2007 and their was a fight outside the back of the bar involving the singer of another band and his mom and them getting arrested.

Do you prefer playing in your hometown or on the road? What’s the biggest difference?

On the Road, the crowd comes to see you specifically and are much more appreciative of the music.

Do you prefer small venues or big venues? Why?

Small Venues because its more intimate and you can interact and meet the audience.

What was the first record/cd/tape you ever bought? And where did you buy it?

FACT Tennis: a game the band plays on the Road.

Who would play you in a film based upon your life?

Giles: Russell Brand UK Actor.

What’s the best piece of advice someone has ever given you and did you take notice?

Love oneself because in the end, there’s no-one else

What would be your perfect LA day? What do you hope to do while you’re here?

Hit the beaches, looking at the peaches; Rainbow bar and grill; ‘guilty pleasures’

What three things could you not live without?

Swansea City Soccer team, Jim Beam, Cigarettes, Sarcasm and Beer goggles

Tell us a fact about yourself we probably don’t already know.

Laurie’s a birdwatcher; Sam’s a member of the Swansea City Support Trust; Steve has the smallest hands for any man his height; James doesn’t think like a normal human being; Giles is a gentleman even when he’s not.
