LA Wouned: Diver Finds Body, Wallet Saves Life, Great Whites in Town

- One dead and one saved by wallet in drive-by shooting - A wallet in a man’s back pocket shielded him from injury early this morning in a drive-by shooting in South LA today. The unidentified, uninjured man, was riding a bicycle alongside Travon Lee Gentry, 37, in the 200 block of East 52nd Street about 1:40 a.m. when a blue Chevy Malibu pulled up alongside them and two men inside began shooting. Gentry was shot in the back and neck and died at the scene. The other man was shot in the buttocks, but his wallet stopped the bullet. No arrests had been made this morning in connection with the shooting.
- San Diego swimmer was killed by a great white shark - A shark expert says an autopsy has confirmed it was a great white that killed a 66-year-old swimmer in the waters off San Diego County last week. An investigator from the medical examiner’s office says two shark’s tooth fragments were recovered from David Martin’s body. Los Angeles-area shark expert Ralph Collier assisted with the autopsy. He says the fragments indicate the shark was a great white 15 to 16 feet long. For more information on the attack and to participate in a poll go here.
- 75-year-old woman killed by possible drunk driver - Miguel Angel Gallardo, 45, of Anaheim, is being held for possibly being drunk when he ran a red light and killed a 75-year-old woman and injured her passenger. The accident took place at the intersection of Orangewood Avenue and 9th Street around 10:50 p.m. Monday. The driver of a compact car and a 40-year-old woman were moving westbound on Orangewood when they were struck by a black Chevy Tahoe. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The 40-year-old victim was transported to UCI Medical Center and is in stable condition. The Tahoe also crashed into a block wall, but the driver was not hurt.
- (Not LA, but close) Diver finds body in submerged car - A salvage company diver searching for sunken vehicles in the Sacramento River has discovered a body about 15 miles south of the state capital. Michele Wallace, a spokeswoman for the Yolo County coroner’s office, says the body was found inside a submerged 2004 blue Hyundai south of Clarksburg. Wallace says the body appears to have been in the water for a while. The age and gender of the victim is unknown.
- Another Compton shooting leaves one dead and another wounded - A fatal shooting at the Compton Metro Blue Line station Monday left one man dead at the scene and another seriously wounded. An unidentified male opened fire on the station about 6 p.m., killing a man in his 50s. The survivor was shot twice but was able to run into a nearby grocery store to hide. He was later taken to a local hospital where his injuries were not considered life-threatening this morning. No arrests had been made this morning, and investigators have not released descriptions of the shooter or the names of the victims, Pena said. The attack marks the sixth fatal shooting in Compton since April 17.
- SeaWorld dolphin dies after colliding with another dolphin - A 30-year-old female dolphin died Saturday at SeaWorld’s Discovery Cove after colliding with another dolphin during an aerial stunt. Sharky was performing a jump for park visitors when she collided with the other mammal and died.
