Local (Badly Reported) News: Puppy Mills

April 30th, 2008 Written by: Mali· 1 Comment

puppiesincages08-05-01I just have to make mention of a case of horrible reporting done yesterday on CBS2 by David Goldstein. Between the sound-bytes and feeding people lines all I can see is the biggest asshole that ever roomed the planet as he goes “undercover” to tear down a puppy mill.

Unfortunately, some breeders that claim to be responsible, when they are little more than puppy mills. David Goldstein goes undercover to investigate one such “breeder” near Palmdale.

On their website they say puppies are carefully bred–in the house with constant attention. But this is what we uncovered at World Kennel USA near Palmdale. Dogs in cage after cage after cage.

Goldstein does a story to investigate and possibly shut down a supposed “puppy mill.” Now I agree that these places should be shut down and that people should be wary buying of dogs from pet stories (want a dog, go to the pound) but what this guy is doing is ridiculous.

Let me sum it up. The puppy mill was investigated, given changes, which they made and then was pushed for further investigation by Goldstein. On the second time through (who knows why they didn’t see this the first time) they found over 400 dogs on the property, which only allows 100 dogs on it. David Goldstein feels a sense of pride that he’s done something good, the puppy mill has now been ordered to get rid of 300 puppies or the place will get shut down.

What the do you think is going to happen to those puppies people? Most likely…

  1. Go to a pound where people won’t pick them up because they’d rather pay $1000 at a store than rescue the same animal.
  2. They will get RID of them - Most likely the least attractive puppies or ones over 6 months because those are least likely to sell.

I understand that puppy mills are horrible and need to be shut down. But wouldn’t it be better if instead of just telling these people to cut their supply but 75%, to possibly help find homes for these puppies? Or possibly ban the owners from having new puppies born? Or maybe regulate them so that this doesn’t happen? Anything other than just saying get rid of 300 animals?

You can watch the video of the story here.

But that is just my take on it, what’s yours?
