Music News: Pig, Vegoose, Chuck Ragan and more

Roger Waters PigPig on the Loose

So, remember on The Simpsons where Homer goes on tour with The Smashing Pumpkins, Cypress Hill, Sonic Youth and Peter Frampton? Remember when Peter Frampton’s pig (which he bought at Roger Waters garage sale) hits Homer in the gut, inflates and flies away? Well, sometimes life imitates art as Roger Waters inflatable pig flew away during last weekends headlining Coachella performance. Feel free to insert random “When pigs fly” joke here. The following day Coachella officials offered a $10,000 reward and four Coachella tickets for life for whoever found the wayward pig. Well, apparently a giant inflatable pig with pro-Obama references spray painted on it can’t stay lost forever, as the pig was recovered on the property of two La Quinta residences Tuesday night. The two families will split the prize money equally and hopefully donate the free Coachella tickets to:

Vegoose Kaput

  • They rolled the dice. They played the deck. They let it ride. They did it, umm, there way. But in the end, they went bust. After three years of business, Las Vegas’ Vegoose Music Festival has decided to call it quits. Apparently festival attendance could never reach the level of the festivals inaugural 2005 show which was headlined by The Dave Matthews Band. As the festival went away from the jam band scene the last few years, attendance dropped in half. Personally, the festivals’ cancellation makes me a bit misty eyed, because as an attendee of last years festival I admired its stress free, laidback atmosphere. Last years (awesome!) show featured performances by Rage Against The Machine, Daft Punk, Muse, Gogol Bordello and dozens of others. I’ll take that over Prince and Roger Waters any year. By the way, for feedback sake: is 6am too early to think up good Vegas analogies?

Hot Water-Avail- Lucero Solo Acoustic Tour

  • After reuniting with Hot Water Music for the recent Bamboozle Left Festival, Chuck Ragan will embark on an solo acoustic tour this fall (fall? isn’t it still spring?). The Revival Tour will also feature acoustic performances by Avail lead singer Tim Barry and Lucero’s Ben Nichols. Dates and venues should be announced soon. If you can’t wait till fall (when gas will be $6 a gallon and China will be our new rulers) Mr. Ragan will perform acoustic at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood on July 18th and Chain Reaction on July 19th.

Weiland Going to Jail

  • Velvet Revolver Stone Temple Pilots lead singer Scott Weiland is going to jail for eight days for his recent drunk driving conviction. Mr. Weiland, who is 40, entered a no contest plea for his second DUI conviction in nearly four years. The plea stemmed from his November 21 arrest following a traffic collision on a ramp to a Los Angeles freeway. The singer will likely begin serving his sentence soon as the band start their 65-date reunion tour on May 17th in Ohio. The band will make their Los Angeles appearance at the Hollywood Bowl on June 24th.

Coldplay Release Single Online

  • Coldplay has released its first single from their new album “Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends” for free through its website. The track, “Violet Hill”, was posted on their website for free download on Monday, and within hours the demand was so high for the song that the site crashed. Coldplay’s giveaway follows the recent trend of internet based releases from bands like Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails. The band releases its new album on June 12th and will commence touring shortly after. No word on whether a giant inflatable Obama pig will be used during their performance.
