L.A. Sports This Week - More NBA Playoffs, Finally Dodger Success

May 5th, 2008 Written by: Matt Unangst· No Comments

LA Sports - Regular PhotoThe Lakers look like they might be the best team in the NBA right now. They continue their playoff run this week. Both the Dodgers and Angels have been hot lately, and look to build off their recent success.

NBA

Lakers

  • vs Utah, Wednesday, 7:30, TNT
  • at Utah, Friday, 6:00, ESPN
  • at Utah, Sunday, 12:30, ABC

The Lakers rolled over the Jazz 109-98 on Sunday in a game that dragged horribly near the end, with 24 fouls called in the 4th quarter. The Jazz probably won’t go down that easily in the rest of the series, but the Lakers seem to be peaking right now and may be able to make it through the series without too many issues. Something to look out for is the Jazz’ success at home – they lost only four games at EnergySolutions Arena over the entire regular season, although Houston did win there once in the first round.

MLB

Dodgers

  • vs New York Mets, Monday, 7:10, FSPT
  • vs New York Mets, Tuesday, 7:10, FSPT
  • vs New York Mets, Wednesday, 12:10, FSPT
  • vs Houston, Friday, 7:40, FSPT
  • vs Houston, Saturday, 7:10, FSPT
  • vs Houston, Sunday, 1:10, FSPT

The Dodgers had rolled off eight victories in a row before losing to the Colorado Rockies on Sunday. Having crawled back to respectability, the Dodgers now face the Mets, the preseason favorite in the NL. Luckily, they will not have to face the Mets’ big offseason acquisition, Johan Santana, this time around. The Astros have managed to play .500 ball so far despite a lack of talent, but they should provide an easy series victory for the Dodgers.

Angels

  • at Kansas City, Monday, 5:10, FSW
  • at Kansas City, Tuesday, 5:10, FSW
  • at Kansas City, Wednesday, 5:10, FSW
  • at Tampa Bay, Friday, 4:10, FSW
  • at Tampa Bay, Saturday, 4:10, KCOP
  • at Tampa Bay, Sunday, 10:40 AM, KCOP

The Angels are riding high, sitting in first place in the AL West at the moment and expecting ace John Lackey back within a couple of weeks. They now get to face the perennially week Royals, whom they should beat in the series; before heading to Tampa Bay to take on the surprising Rays, who have some of the best young talent in the game, including Long Beach State product Evan Longoria, who signed a lucrative multi-year contract just a few games into his ML career.

MLS

Galaxy

  • vs New York, Saturday, 7:30

The Red Bulls of New York continue to be one of the worst teams in Major League Soccer, but they do bring 18-year-old sensation Jozy Altidore to the Home Depot Center on Saturday. Altidore, already a member of the U.S. National Team, is supposedly being courted by a number of big European teams.

Chivas USA

  • vs New England, Sunday, 12:00

New England has been one of MLS’ most successful teams, but they’re stuck in the middle of the pack in the Eastern Conference this season. Chivas USA has struggled this season and is now without star defender Claudio Suarez, who is suspended for having drawn a red card this past weekend. The team will probably continue its poor play next weekend.
