MELISSA SIMS, “NEONÂ VACATION”
May 8 â June 8, 2008
Opening:Â May 8, 6-9pm
Drawn to the photo-realist movement of the seventies and inspired by the original photo realist Caravaggio, Melissa Sims uses her background and degree in photography to record images for her paintings. When photography alone was no longer satisfying her creative drive it brought her to the dynamic arena of painting where she began layering oil and acrylic with resin, building up a depth and sheen that aligns poetically with her images. Sims paints on 2″ deep wood panel boxes wrapping the painting around the edge giving even greater depth to her images.
“My paintings are filled with images that make me feel good. There is enough sad, bad and scary in this world, just watch the news. So I want to give myself and those who look at my paintings, the chance to escape it all and have a fun mini vacation.” -Melissa Sims
