The youth fell down with a gunshot wound and was found by officers responding to reports of a shooting at Glenoaks and Van Nuys Blvd. at about 8:30 p.m. The youth was taken to a hospital where he died. Investigators questioned two groups of boys at the scene, who said they had been involved in a fistfight when the shooting began. • Doctor arrested in connection with patients death - Dr. Wesley Albert, 78, was arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter today in connection with the death of patient Jason Morgan, 28, who took large amounts of muscle relaxants the doctor allegedly prescribed in exchange for money. Morgan died in November after ingesting large amounts of Soma, also known as Carisoprodol, a skeletal muscle relaxant usually prescribed for acute back pain. Morgan had 30 bottles of narcotics prescribed by Albert, who routinely prescribed more than five times the normal quantity prescribed by doctors.
  • Man convicted of murder for stove on freeway - An OC jury has convicted Cole Allen Wilkins of Long Beach, of the murder of LA County sheriff’s deputy David Piquette, who was killed in a traffic collision after swerving out of the path of a stove, which allegedly stolen from a construction site and tumbled out of the man’s pickup. Wilkins’ attorney maintained that the case against his client was highly unfair because he never planned or intended to harm Piquette. On July 7, 2006, Wilkins, 31, was driving a Ford F-250 loaded with appliances that he’d allegedly stolen from a home construction site in Riverside County. Piquette, 34, a father of twins and a 10-year veteran of the LA Sheriff’s Department, was on his way to work about 5 a.m.

Beltran, who is married and has worked at Lincoln Middle School for two decades, taught English as a second language. Deputy Dist. Atty. • 96 People arrested in San Diego drug bust - Ninety-six people have been arrested, including 75 students, after an extensive undercover drug investigation centering on San Diego State, the district attorney’s office announced today. Undercover agents infiltrated the university’s fraternity houses and allegedly discovered evidence of widespread drug-dealing. The drugs included marijuana, cocaine and Ecstasy. Most of the marijuana was grown locally. The investigation, called Operation Sudden Fall, began a year ago after an overdose by a female student at the university. “This operation shows accessible and pervasive illegal drugs continue to be on our college, campuses and how common it is for students to be selling to other students.”
  • Homeless man’s death is ruled a homicide - A punch to the face that took the life of a homeless man last month in Reseda is being investigated as a homicide. Witnesses saw a man punch Harold Gene Loftis, 69, at a bus stop at Roscoe and Reseda boulevards about 10 p.m. April 14. The attack appeared to be unprovoked — witnesses did not hear the attacker demand money and said he did not appear to know Loftis. The punch knocked Loftis off-balance and he fell, hit his head on the sidewalk and lost consciousness. Loftis was taken to a hospital where he underwent two brain surgeries before he died May 1.

Someone inside the suspect’s vehicle allegedly grabbed Zarate’s wife’s hair as the vehicle passed by, and she reportedly suffered cuts and bruises when she fell on the ground.
