For the second week in a row, justice was served in the land of “Idol”.
Jason Castro finally followed Brooke White out the door last night on “Idol”. This was a long time coming for the dread-locked one, whose lackadaisical obliteration of songs week after week finally overtook the support from his screeching pre-pubescent fan-base.
Castro’s exit was a delightful ending to an evening that gave further credence the notion that the results show need only be a half-hour, especially when Seacrest cuts the pool of potential victims in half 20 minutes into the program.
The Idols did stand united just long enough to completely eviscerate Steely Dan’s “Reeling in the Years”, turning a clever break up song into a tweeny pop tart. At one point, the troupe parted to reveal what seemed to be a special guest, but turned out only to be “Idol”’s bandleader, Rickey Minor. Fascinating.
After Seacrest did his best King Solomon impression it was time for the viewer calls. The standout of the bunch was a girl who called in to ask David Cook out on a date when the tour came to town. This might have been cute if it was a star-struck 13-year-old, but this girl was aged 24 years and seemed very serious. Creepy.
Once that ordeal was over, it was time for a special celebrity guest. This time the “treat” was Maroon 5. It seems Adam Levine’s voice gets higher with every new single, and the tunes similarly increase in annoyance. After his performance, Levine told the Idols to get ready to work and become jaded. Wow, the music industry sure sounds like fun!
Not to be outdone, former “Idol” aspirant Bo Bice followed Levine. He stumbled through some Bon Jovi-flavored take on Southern Rock and then proceeded to give the Idols his own advice. This included commentary about how this year’s contestants tended to hid behind their instruments and weren’t able to really perform. Bitter much, Bo?
Finally the time came for Jason to go home. The highlight of his farewell video was clearly his duet with the crazy “You are my brother” guy from the first round of auditions. Castro seemed a lot nicer and more talented earlier in the season. What on Earth happened?
Oh well, time for the power rankings.
- (1) David Archuleta â He’s got the best voice and some rabid fans that know how to text. He’s easily the one to beat.
- (4) Syesha Mercado â After several straight weeks of great performances, Mercado has played herself into serious contention. She’s peaking at the right time.
- (2) David Cook â Cook may have peaked too soon. His last few weeks have been mediocre at best, leaving many to yearn for his innovation in the middle of the season. The fact that he’s becoming increasingly smug doesn’t help.
