They make Paninis out of croissants, people! This alone should lead your nose to Il Tramezzino, where sandwich grilling has reached something of an art.
Originally opened in 1991 in Beverly Hills, Studio City now knows the glory of our posh friends over the hill with Il Tramezzino’s authentic Italian paninis. I first tried the infamous “Grilled Chicken” panini, recommended by the owner, and it had me clutching at the corners of my table. Sun dried tomato, avocado, swiss cheese and basil garlic sauce, sing to me! I believe I have found the perfect panini. Yet again, I discovered a cafe in the Valley that I never thought would be in the Valley.
With a very Euro flair, Il Tramezzino proudly sells all manner of these delectable grilled delights. Prosciutto, roasted red peppers, Italian Salami, smoked turkey breast, grilled eggplant, chili-mayo sauce, brie cheese, cantalope… these are just a few of the colors on the pallette of Il Tramezzino. With 3 amazing veggie versions as well, some packed with goat cheese and thick wedges of roma tomato, arugula, mushrooms and more, trying to list them all would be like trying to highlight the prettiest color of spring. Part of the joy is just taking a look for yourself and letting that menu awaken your hunger for something special. Create your own picture of perfection. (But I will say that the breakfast croissant panini with nutella and strawberry or banana paints something akin to PURE SEX).
The cafe sits on Ventura blvd near Coldwater Canyon in Studio City, a stone’s throw from another Euro-inspired haven, Le Pain Quotidien. As we all know, it’s not the most charming thing in the world to sit on a busy road and breathe car fumes when you dine “al fresco” in Los Angeles, but the covered patio in back and the modest indoor dining area is surprisingly quaint and airy. The menu is packed with the aformentioned, lust-inspiring paninis made with thin country bread, salads, pasta, a variety of coffee drinks and pastries from Milan. I can’t vouch for the coffee being all that amazing, sadly, but hot damn, have I said the paninis are an act of God? You get the idea.
Now go my children of Spring, go and make love to your food like the Italians!
