- Matt Welch: Deconstructing McCain | Thursday, May 15, 2008 | 7:30 p.m. | Free, although reservations are recommended | Los Angeles Central Library - Map| Matt Welch, editor-in-chief of Reason magazine and author of McCain: The Myth of a Maverick deconstructs Republican Presidential nominee John McCain and argues that his interventionist politics flow from the same single source: He wants to restore faith in the federal government and in the “greater cause” of American exceptionalism. Anything that jeopardizes that faith or sows public cynicism is a legitimate target of federal attention. Unfortunately, Welch says, it’s the individual citizens (especially those who don’t agree with McCain’s militaristic conception of citizenship), who usually suffer the consequences.

His latest book is Divisadero, a novel about passion, loss and the unshakable past set in the 1970s in Northern California, Nevada and south-central France. The story revolves around a father and his teenage girls and how an “incident of violence - of both hand and heart- sets fire to the rest of their lives.”
