LA Wounded: Police Kill Passengar, Solider Killed, 6-Year-Old Killed

- Police Kill Unarmed Man - Two unidentified officers, who heard gunshots while patrolling Inglewood, fatally shot an unarmed passenger in an approaching car. The officers fired multiple times at the car in a parking lot near Crenshaw Blvd and 8th Ave about 1:40 a.m. Sunday, killing the passenger, Michael Byoune, 19, and wounding the driver, Larry White, 19. A third person in the car was not hurt. No weapons were found at the scene, and no one has been arrested or charged. The men in the car were not gang members. Three independent witnesses have said they saw a man standing in the parking lot pointing a gun in the direction of the officers before the fatal shooting, but nothing has been confirmed. “As the chief of police I want to assure you all that our investigation will be objective and comprehensive,” said Seabrooks, who was appointed chief last year.
- Driver arrested for killing six-year-old boy - Woman arrested today in connection with the death of a 6-year-old boy. Monica Christine Martinez, 30, was arrested for alleged gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence when she hit Edgar Curiel of Coachella while he was riding his bike. The boy was hit by a 1988 Buick Skylark traveling northbound at Harrison Street, south of Avenue 53. “The boy sustained major injuries and was transported to JFK Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.”
- Female solider from Temecula dies in Iraq - The U.S. Army Monday was investigating the death of a 20-year-old female soldier from Temecula who died in Iraq over the weekend. Mary Jane Jaenichen, who was killed under non-combat related circumstances, had been stationed in Iskandariyah, Iraq, since May 2007. She was serving with the Brigade Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, based at Fort Stewart, Ga. She died Friday, U.S. Army Lt. Colonel Randy Martin, who is in Iraq, said during a telephone interview. Martin said he could not comment on the possible cause of death until the investigation was completed.
- City files injunction against prostitutes - A court injunction against 36 prostitutes and five pimps is expected to reduce crime in the Figueroa Corridor. The injunction prevents the 41 individuals from entering the Figueroa Corridor, defined as 100 yards on each side of Figueroa St. between Vernon Ave and El Segundo Blvd in South LA. The pimps also must report their vehicle and housing information to the LAPD. According to the City Attorney’s Office, 36 women have been convicted of engaging in prostitution near the area and four of the five pimps are affiliated with the Shotgun Crips, Front Hood Crips and Denver Lane Bloods.
