LA Sports: Woeful Weekend for L.A. Soccer

May 12th, 2008 Written by: Diego Santiago· 1 Comment

lagalaxy08-05-13Mother’s Day weekend wasn’t too nurturing for any of the local soccer teams. Both the Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA teams were defeated at the Home Depot Center in Major League Soccer’s Week 7 with an identical score of 2-1.

We begin on Saturday where the Galaxy received an improved New York Red Bulls team. A favorable result could have given Los Angeles the absolute lead in the Western Conference but unfortunately the win never arrived. Danleigh Borman and the Colombian international Juan Pablo Angel scored for the visitors. As for the Angelinos, Alan Gordon was the man in charge of scoring the solitary goal.

With this loss, the Galaxy remains in third place in the Western Conference with 8 points and a record of (2-3-2).

At the same venue but fifteen hours later, Chivas USA received the New England Revolution. The current Eastern Conference Champions were trying to forget that dreadful 3-0 loss against Chicago in the previous week. As for the locals, a good result would end their nasty streak of four winless games.

Unfortunately for Chivas, the “Revs” came in with an inspired team and with goals by Gambian international Kenny Mansally and striker Taylor Twellman, the victory was for the guys from the Northeast. Even Justin Braun’s first professional goal at the last minute was not enough for the “Chiverio,” who are now second to last in the Western Conference with a dreadful record of (1-4-2).

No matter what the L.A. teams did this weekend, it seemed as if their destiny was to lose.

Not even because they both played in their home court. Not even the fact that flourishing David Beckham was the current “Player of the Week.” Not even if Chivas USA controlled the ball and attacked more frequently. Nothing, absolutely nothing of that mattered at the end when another number was added to the “Loss” column for both teams.

With approximately one quarter of the season gone, this mediocrity is not only affecting the local teams but also the entire league. If commissioner Garber wants soccer to grow to a higher national level, he better pray that the L.A. teams don’t have many weeks like these. With such an important venue and millions of dollars invested in these two teams, an absence in the playoffs can hurt the league.

But, it is still early in the season and anything can happen. There’s plenty of time for these two teams to react and regain the respect they’ve steadily lost.

With Mother’s Day still fresh in our memories I can recount what a wise mother taught her son one day. She said, “It is not how you start, but how you finish,” and these two teams should definitely listen carefully. They both have the capacity to change their seasons and finish strong. Let’s just hope they pay attention to the advice… since Mother knows best.

I had the unfortunate opportunity to attend the Galaxy game. I’m starting to wonder if Beckham was worth the price of admission.
