Known for his unique guitar techniques, Kirk Swan brings us another great alternative folk rock album with his Tom Petty like vocals. It’s Only Me is and album on the introspective aspects of life heeding great advice with amazing guitar riffs.
With an opening track such as “Stop, Don’t Think, Just Listen,” he steps into a Bruce Springsteen vibe as he is backed up by drums. In his insightful “It’s Only Me,” he plays a beautiful melody to match his thoughts. Describing the overwhelming and unexplained, Swan gives songs a perfect setting and insight to the thoughts many of us have everyday. With “Another Year,” we are reminded of how time literally slips through our fingers in a seemly uplifting way. The song is complimented with his Bob Dylan-esque harmonica’s which add a soothing and pleasant tone to the song.
As much as Swan may ponder, we also learn that he is a guy who knows how to get down to business. His most fast paced song, “Nowhere to Fall” illustrates this in his lyrics as well as his upbeat tempos.
This is an album that brings us back to the laid back rockers such as Petty, Springsteen and Dylan. Swan’s It’s Only Me gives us a soundtrack to a life where we don’t forget that things happen for a reason. However, through his music we can see the optimism in day to day life, complete with kick ass guitar riffs and beats. This is one introspective album that doesn’t whine or attack.
If you get a chance, take a listen to some of the tracks on his myspace for some folk rock R&R.
