LA Opinion: Rant on Rent

May 13th, 2008 Written by: Matt· 3 Comments

110109976_bf134a019f.jpgIt’s not very often that I burst into huge fits of laughter. Being a comic, I’m usually to busy making other people do that. However when the following notice appeared on my apartment door, it just couldn’t be helped.

(Effective 60 days from today the rent will be increased from $1300 a month to $1900). Curiously, I searched for a second page to this notice that should have read something along these lines. The reason for this insanely dramatic increase in rent is due to the following. We will be installing a heated pool, state of the art fitness center, and every Tuesday you will have the option of receiving a blow job from a supermodel. Strangely enough, it turned out that there was no second page. After contacting many different local housing authorities the answer to my question came back the same each time. Since the apartment was on a month to month lease this was actually “legal.”

Los Angeles has long been known for it’s high cost of living, and up until now the tradeoff has been worth it. Pay high rent and we’ll give you great weather, tons of interesting things to do, and for all you Celebrity obsessed fans, just take a drive into Malibu. This was all well and good until the Housing market started to go down hill. Now, record numbers of LA family’s are loosing their homes faster than Hannah Montana tickets are selling out. Just where do you go to live when you don’t have a house? An apartment.

This in turn, has caused the “non” rent controlled apartments to skyrocket in price. Leaving all the people who count on being able to afford an already high monthly rent, scrambling for other housing options. More often than not this leads to moving further away, which adds to a longer commute, which leads to spending more money on gas. By the way, is it just me, or are gas prices still on the rise. Like most LA citizens I don’t mind paying $5 for a latte or $14 to see a movie. But landlords are crossing the line when they go all Sheriff of Nottingham and try to demand more money for the same exact living conditions.

So to all you property owners out there, here’s a final thought. It’s bad enough we have to live in fear of Drunk driving young Hollywood starlets, Earthquakes, and whether or not Kobe will bring us another championship. Just keep the rent affordable, and we the tenants promise not to come to your door and re-enact our favorite scene from Falling Down.

That’s terrible. I am so tired of these greedy apartment owners. I hope you find an affordable new apartment.

I’m having trouble finding a roommate. And I have a huge place and the rent is reasonable. I guess it depends on the neighborhood.

That very same thing chased us out of Hollywood about a year and a half ago. 20% rent increases came around and most of the tenants who had lived in our building for more than 10 years had to move. Our manager felt awful about it because the mandate had come from above, but there was nothing he could do but accept everyone’s 30-day notice.

I loved that apartment (and the building, and the manager) but not an extra $250/month worth of love.
