
- Cop gets 13 years behind bars - Facing a potential life sentence in federal prison, a former LAPD officer, Palomares, 38, admitted to being the mastermind of a home invasion robbery gang. He apologized for his crimes Monday, telling a federal judge, “I became that that I hated. I became a criminal, something I never wanted to be.” Palomares, a former Golden Gloves boxer said he wanted his freedom so he could “be the man that God created me to be… and not this person in a cage.” He is to serve 13 years in federal prison, coupled with time he is serving on a related drug case.
- 90-year-old woman deliberately killed in fire - A $10,000 reward was posted today for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the death of a 90-year-old, Eveyln Oletha Mosely, an Altadena grandmother whose body was found in her home, which had been set on fire deliberately. Firefighters who quickly extinguished a blaze last Thursday at 3225 Lincoln Ave. discovered her body on the kitchen floor. Investigators found signs of a struggle inside the home she shared with her daughter and grandson. Anyone with information should call (323) 890-5500.
- 9-month old nearly drowns in tub - A 9-month-old girl almost drowned Tuesday in a bathtub in her North Hills home. Paramedics sent to the 8100 block of N. Langdon Avenue at 12:31 p.m. airlifted the baby to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles in stable condition.The child was in the bathtub with an older sibling when the she nearly drowned, according to preliminary report.
- Fire causes 210 to be closed - A small brush fire broke out Tuesday afternoon near the westbound 210 Freeway in the Lake View Terrace area, prompting the closure of the westbound lanes. Firefighters were sent to the area near Hubbard Street about 1:30 p.m.. Traffic was being diverted onto the westbound Ronald Reagan 118 Freeway. The fire had burned approximately two to three acres.
- Woman killed in crash on 710 - A Signal Hill woman was killed Tuesday when she crashed on the southbound 710 Freeway. The name of the victim, who was in her 20s, was being withheld, pending notification of her relatives. The woman was driving a 1994 Honda “at a high rate of speed” in the fast lane when the vehicle swerved to the right, crossed all the lanes and hit the concrete support structure of an overcrossing. The cause of the crash was under investigation.
- Woman shot to death in Gardena - A woman was fatally shot in Gardena Monday night. The woman, whose name has not been released, was shot in a building in the 2300 block of West Rosecrans Avenue near Van Ness Avenue about 6:45 p.m.. A shop owner nearby heard gunshots coming from the building, and when she went to investigate she found the woman lying wounded on the floor. She was taken to the hospital where she later died of the gunshot wounds.
