Upcoming Events: Country-Style Festivities for Workaholic City-Dwellers

May 13th, 2008 Written by: Nicola· No Comments

Strawberry Festival Nothing controversial or crazy in this post, but instead some good, old-fashioned, home-grown fun. Parties, shopping, protests? Nope. But banjos, strawberries, and wheel-barrows? Yes’m. So whether you’re in desperate need of a break from high-intensity L.A. or just want to see if I’m making up these uncharacteristically country-style happenings, go ahead and head on over, folks.

First and most folky:

1. 48th Annual Topanga Banjo Fiddle Festival and Folk Contest - Tell me this is not the most awesome thing you’ve ever heard: the festival is held where mountain and western films were once filmed. So could I be standing in the same place John Wayne was? I wonder.. Anyway, here are all the folsky details:

When: May 18, from 9am to 6pm.

Where: Paramount Movie Ranch (there WOULD be a movie ranch in LA..) It’s located at the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area on Cornell Rd. (By Agoura).

Why you want to go: Over 100 musicians competing, along with apparently quite legit Celtic, folk, and bluegrass bands.

Tickets and such: Sold at the gate for $12. Kids only $7, seniors as well. Under 10 free.

What else is free: Parking and shuttle bus.

What a cute idea: Bringing a picnic and a guitar and humming along to the tunes, perhaps while maybe making some daisy chains?

For more information and photos: Visit the festival online. You can also call (818) 382 - 4819 or write to info@topangabanjofiddle.org.

2. California Strawberry Festival. Sweet, dude!

Where: In Oxnard, at Strawberry Meadows of College Park. 3520 South Rose Avenue Oxnard, CA

When: Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18.

Why: Because nothing in the world sounds better right now than strawberries everywhere. Fresh, cold strawberries.

But do beware: Not free strawberries. Admission is $12 unless you happen to be younger than five years old. I’m guessing the strawberries will be very juicy and not genetically altered, for this price.

Where to find it: Look for lots of strawberries, or, head to
Strawberry Meadows of College Park 3520 South Rose Ave., in Oxnard.

Hey, while you’re at it, cruise on up to Santa Barbara along 101, handing strawberries out your window as you go! (Last time I had a ball giving a piece of my watermelon to the neighboring fellow in the lane over. Sharing the road, and, food makes the drive more pleasant! I digress. But seriously, try it. Stuck in traffic? Have a snack break with your fellow sufferers.)

Visit the online land of berries at the Strawberry Festival site.
