A Good Old Fashioned Dance: Big Band Glamour at the Avalon Ball

May 14th, 2008 Written by: Mali· 1 Comment

avalonball08-05-14Remember the good ol’ days when a man asked a woman to dance and a woman accepted and then they twirled around the room? I don’t, I was born in the 80’s. BUT! I have seen it in movies and it looks fun! So if you’re looking for a bit of glamour to add to your life, this Saturday, May 17, Catalina Island will relive its glamorous past when the Art Deco Society of Los Angeles & Maxwell DeMille present the Big Band Glamour at the Avalon Ball, a glorious night of moonlight and dancing, at the historic Avalon Casino Ballroom.

All you have to do is hop on a boat (it only takes about 30-40 minutes) and you’ll arrive at the the world-famous Casino (although there is no gambling) on Catalina. There you will be able to dance the night away to the Jazz Age stylings of Mora’s Modern Rhythmists one of the pre-eminent big bands of this classic music revival, will be taking stage and playing the Lindy Hop, Jitterbug, Balboa, the Charleston, Tango, Foxtrot, waltzes, rumbas and more.

Tickets are on sale now: $40 for members/$50 for non-members. Call (310) 659-3346 or visit the Art Deco Society’s website for more information and to purchase tickets.

To book your boat ride call the Catalina Express at 1-800-481-3470 or visit the Catalina Chamber website where you can also book a hotel room for the night (if you so choose).
