“American Idol”: So Long Syesha

May 15th, 2008 Written by: Andrew· No Comments

syesha08-05-15 After a dozen or so weeks, and one long hour we finally have the final two we all expected to see.

There isn’t a whole lot to say about last night’s results show. The vote left only the two singers named David, just as everybody expected after Cook’s version of “Hello” prior to the move to the big stage.

Surprisingly, the show made effective use of its time with some montages of the Idols’ trips to their hometowns and their journeys on the show thus far. These hardly seemed like filler and actually increased the suspense as the night wore on.

Too bad we all knew what was coming.

The lone lowlight of the evening, and it stuck out like a flashing red beacon, was the eardrum-ripping performance of former winner Fantasia. Her lyrics were completely unintelligible and she flung herself around the stage like an angry bar singer who already blew her fee on booze. This was the worst performance by a former “Idol” this season, which means it could have been the worst televised performances of all time.

Now we’re left with the David vs. David finale we were all expecting. Neither ever landed in the bottom three and both always received screams from the audience and praise from the judges. But who’s going to win?

Based on their performances so far, it seems that the elder David will ride to “Idol” glory. He doesn’t get the screams of Archuleta, but the tween girls in the audience represent only a portion of the show’s voting populace. There’s also old people who know how to work a touch tone, hipsters who pretend they only watch the show to be ironic, and 9-5ers who like the show enough to vote.

There’s no doubt that Cook will own the hipsters who will see his march toward the top with emo version of pop songs as something as a victory for their disaffected contingent. The touch tone-savvy elderly will probably split their vote between the two. They’re certain to love the innocence of Archuleta, but Cook has to win part of them over with his talent. As for the rest, they’ll probably fall into Cook’s camp. There’s no doubt he’s a better performer than Archuleta, and his takes on some of the songs they love should draw them to his side.

And then there’s Syesha. Poor Syesha. She really did a fine effort this year and was easily the most like a pop star of anybody who made it deep into the competition. As the parade of former contestants showed, she could have won the whole thing in nearly every other year, but fell victim this season to the anointed status of David Archuleta and the “talent” of David Cook. We’ll just have to see how her first album fairs against the two finalists’.

After all, the real competition begins several months after the show ends.
